Anthropic Establishes First Asia-Pacific Hub in Tokyo, Bolstering Claude’s Japanese Capabilities and Market Presence

Anthropic, a prominent U.S.-based artificial intelligence company, has announced its strategic expansion into the Asia-Pacific region with the establishment of its first office in Tokyo, Japan, slated for Fall 2025. This significant move, initially revealed on June 25, 2025, underscores Anthropic’s commitment to strengthening its generative AI service, Claude, for the Japanese market and directly engaging with local enterprises.

The Tokyo office will serve as a pivotal hub for Anthropic, focusing on bolstering Japanese language support for Claude, expanding local operations, and recruiting a dedicated team of local talent. The company aims to meet the high standards for quality and cultural understanding expected by Japanese businesses, while continuing its mission to develop responsible AI. Kate Jensen, Anthropic’s Chief Revenue Officer, highlighted these plans at the AWS Summit Japan on June 25, emphasizing the final stages of preparation for the office’s autumn launch.

The decision to establish a direct presence in Japan marks a shift from Anthropic’s previous reliance on platform partners like Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud Vertex AI for market penetration. This direct operational and sales approach is expected to deepen localization efforts and accelerate the adoption of Claude across various Japanese industries.

Anthropic has already seen substantial organic adoption of Claude among Japanese power users and businesses. Major Japanese corporations such as Rakuten, Panasonic, and Nomura Research Institute (NRI) are currently leveraging Claude’s advanced capabilities. Rakuten utilizes Claude for autonomous coding projects, NRI has enhanced the efficiency of complex Japanese document analysis, and Panasonic has integrated the AI into its business processes and its digital family wellness platform, Umi. Dario Amodei, CEO and co-founder of Anthropic, expressed enthusiasm for deepening these partnerships and assisting more Japanese companies in creating transformative products and services with AI.

In a further development, Anthropic announced the appointment of Hidetoshi Tojo as Head of Japan on August 6, 2025. Tojo brings extensive experience from scaling technology companies across Japan, including previous roles at Snowflake, Google Cloud Japan, and Microsoft. His leadership is expected to be instrumental in driving Anthropic’s rapid expansion and ensuring the provision of safe, secure, and trustworthy AI solutions, which are highly valued by Japanese enterprises.
