AMD Unveils Advanced Generative AI for Local ‘Print Quality’ Image Creation on Ryzen AI Laptops

TLDR: AMD, in collaboration with Stability AI, has introduced a new generative AI model, SD 3.0 Medium, designed to produce ‘print quality’ images directly on laptops. This innovation leverages the local Neural Processing Units (NPUs) found in AMD Ryzen AI 300 and AI MAX+ CPUs, enabling high-fidelity AI image generation offline and without an internet connection. The model is optimized for AMD’s XDNA 2 NPU, featuring a unique block FP16 design for efficient performance.

AMD has announced a significant leap in local generative AI capabilities, promising ‘print quality’ images directly from laptops equipped with its latest processors. The company, in collaboration with Stability AI, has launched the ‘world’s first block FP16 SD 3.0 Medium model,’ specifically optimized for AMD’s XDNA 2 Neural Processing Units (NPUs) found in Ryzen AI 300 and AI MAX+ CPUs. This development allows users to generate realistic AI images locally on their devices, eliminating the need for an internet connection.

The core of this advancement lies in the AMD Ryzen AI 300 mobile processors, which feature the XDNA 2 NPU. Unveiled at Computex 2024, this NPU boasts an impressive 50 TOPS (Tera Operations Per Second) of AI performance. A key innovation within the XDNA 2 NPU is its ‘world’s first’ block FP16 design, which enables 8-bit performance while maintaining 16-bit accuracy. This unique approach optimizes efficiency and precision for mobile NPUs, making high-quality AI image generation feasible on portable devices.

This new SD 3.0 Medium model represents a substantial improvement over AMD’s previous offering, the SDXL Turbo image generator, which was also a pioneering ‘block FP16 stable diffusion model’ at its release. The latest iteration not only enhances the quality of the generated images but is also better optimized for the XDNA 2 NPU, ensuring smoother and more efficient operation. Furthermore, the AMD XDNA 2 NPU is capable of automatically upscaling and doubling the resolution of AI-created images, contributing to the promised ‘print quality.’
