TLDR: Amazon has officially launched Alexa+, a next-generation AI assistant powered by generative AI and large language models (LLMs). This new iteration aims to revolutionize conversational AI by offering more natural interactions, personalized experiences, and advanced capabilities for users across various Amazon devices and services.
Amazon has introduced Alexa+, a significant leap forward in conversational artificial intelligence, designed to transform how users interact with their devices and access information. This new AI assistant, built on a foundation of generative AI and powerful large language models (LLMs) available on Amazon Bedrock, promises a more expansive, natural, and personalized experience than its predecessor. Panos Panay, SVP of Devices & Services at Amazon, highlighted that Alexa+ is “more conversational, smarter, and personalized—and she helps you get things done.”
Alexa+ is engineered to understand nuanced, conversational requests, including half-formed thoughts and colloquial expressions, responding like an insightful friend rather than a rigid program. This enhanced comprehension allows for tailored product recommendations and a redefined shopping experience on Amazon. Beyond shopping, Alexa+ boasts agentic capabilities, enabling it to navigate the internet autonomously to complete complex tasks. It can also manage and protect smart homes, make reservations, track and discover new artists, and provide real-time information and news through partnerships with over 200 news outlets.
Set to roll out in waves to customers through an early access program, Alexa+ will be available on existing Echo Show devices, including the Echo Show 8, 10, 15, and 21. While it is priced at $19.99 per month, Prime users will have free access. The new Alexa+ mobile app will also be available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Amazon’s commitment to AI is evident in its plans to increase capital expenditures to $100 billion in 2025, largely driven by AI investments, underscoring the company’s belief that generative AI is a “once-in-a-lifetime” technology that will reinvent customer experiences.

With over 600 million Alexa-enabled devices globally, Amazon aims to methodically roll out Alexa+ across its ecosystem, including Fire TV, where it will offer a 10-foot experience optimized for larger screens. The new default voice for Alexa+ is designed to be more engaging and conversational, though users can still opt for the original Alexa voice or choose from a range of new male and female voices. This upgrade represents a substantial evolution for Amazon’s voice assistant, aiming to provide a more fluid and capable AI experience for millions of users.
