Alibaba’s Amap Launches AI-Native Mobility Agent, Redefining Navigation with ‘Spatial Intelligence’

TLDR: Alibaba Group’s Amap has unveiled ‘Amap 2025’, featuring an AI-native mobility agent named ‘Xiao Gao’. Powered by Alibaba’s Qwen large language model and developed in collaboration with Tongyi Lab, this new system transforms traditional mapping into a proactive, intelligent travel assistant capable of anticipating user needs and executing complex tasks through natural language.

Alibaba Group’s mapping and local services platform, Amap, has announced a significant technological leap with the introduction of ‘Amap 2025’, which integrates an advanced AI-native mobility agent. This innovation, unveiled around August 2025, positions Amap as a pioneer in redefining how users interact with location-based services, moving beyond passive navigation to proactive, intelligent assistance.

At the core of Amap 2025 is ‘Xiao Gao’, also known as ‘Teacher Xiaogao’, an AI assistant co-developed with Hangzhou Tongyi Laboratory Technology Co., Ltd. (Tongyi Lab). This agent leverages Alibaba’s flagship Qwen large language model (LLM) as its foundational AI, granting it sophisticated spatial intelligence, autonomous reasoning, and decision-making capabilities. Amap, which serves over 1 billion active users, aims to transform AI from a mere conversational tool into a true ‘action partner’ for its vast user base.

Xiao Gao’s functionalities extend far beyond typical voice search. It acts as a proactive travel companion, capable of anticipating user needs by analyzing preferences, real-time traffic conditions, and even weather changes. For instance, it can suggest a quiet coffee shop with a lake view or dynamically adjust a road trip itinerary in response to sudden rainfall. The agent can also handle complex tasks such as booking restaurant reservations, planning multi-stop trips, and facilitating ride-hailing, all through natural language commands.

Guo Ning, CEO of Amap, emphasized the strategic vision behind this development, stating, ‘Spatial intelligence is the capability to perceive, reason, and act within three-dimensional space and time, enabling maps to evolve from passive sensing to proactive prediction.’ He further added, ‘With Amap 2025, we aspire to transform AI from a conversational tool to an actionable partner for our users.’ This move aligns with Alibaba’s broader commitment to heavily invest in AI-driven business transformation across its ecosystem, following similar integrations into services like its Quark internet browser.

The launch of Amap 2025 intensifies competition in the AI-enhanced map services sector, with rivals like Baidu Maps also integrating AI capabilities. However, Alibaba’s focus on ‘agentic AI’ – systems capable of reasoning, planning, and executing tasks – aims to create a frictionless, personalized user experience that deepens ties to Alibaba’s broader commerce and cloud ecosystems. Industry insiders note that the evolution of navigation platforms into comprehensive lifestyle assistants, integrating with various services and apps, is an inevitable ‘interface battle and a service competition’ that companies cannot afford to lose. This strategic play by Alibaba is designed to lock users into its ecosystem, driving higher retention and monetization opportunities through AI-driven personalization.
