China’s public cloud services market dedicated to artificial intelligence witnessed a robust expansion in 2024, with its value soaring by 55% year-on-year to reach 19.6 billion yuan (approximately US$2.7 billion). This substantial growth underscores the escalating demand for AI training and diverse AI applications across the country.
Leading this burgeoning market are two of China’s technology behemoths, Alibaba and Baidu, each commanding an estimated 25% market share. Following closely are Tencent and Huawei, solidifying the dominance of the top four domestic players who collectively hold around 80% of the market. This concentration of market leadership, as noted by consultancy IDC, reflects a consistent competitive dynamic, even amidst rapid growth, suggesting that established cloud infrastructure capabilities are effectively translating into AI service dominance.
The surge in market growth is largely attributed to the increased adoption of generative and agentic AI technologies. Large language models (LLMs) have become particularly prominent since 2023, significantly reshaping the demand for cloud services. This shift indicates a fundamental change in how businesses consume cloud services, moving beyond traditional AI applications like optical character recognition and surveillance towards more versatile LLM capabilities.
Within the AI cloud services sector, the computer vision segment emerged as the largest, recording a 34% increase to 8.1 billion yuan. Tencent and Baidu are identified as the leaders in this specific segment. The demand for AI cloud services is evolving, transitioning from conventional uses such as quality inspection to more advanced applications like autonomous, task-oriented AI.
