Alibaba and HONOR Unveil New AI-Powered Foldable Smartphone, Deepening Strategic Partnership

TLDR: Alibaba and HONOR have significantly advanced their AI collaboration with the launch of the HONOR Magic V5, a new flagship foldable smartphone. This device integrates Alibaba’s advanced AI models, Qwen3 and Qwen-VL, and specialized agents from Fliggy and Amap, enhancing HONOR’s YOYO assistant with capabilities ranging from deep document analysis and conversational practice to real-time visual recognition and seamless travel planning. This partnership underscores Alibaba’s strategic ‘AI+Cloud’ focus and HONOR’s shift towards becoming an AI hardware company.

Alibaba Group and smartphone manufacturer HONOR have announced a significant deepening of their artificial intelligence partnership, marked by the launch of the new HONOR Magic V5 foldable smartphone. This collaboration represents a pivotal moment for both companies, as it integrates Alibaba’s proprietary AI agents directly into mobile devices for the first time, promising to redefine user experiences through advanced intelligent interactions.

The HONOR Magic V5, unveiled on July 2, leverages Alibaba’s cutting-edge AI models, including the Qwen3 large language model and the Qwen-VL vision model. These powerful AI capabilities are seamlessly integrated into HONOR’s intelligent assistant, YOYO, transforming it into a highly sophisticated on-device AI companion. YOYO now offers a range of enhanced functionalities, such as deep document analysis for complex texts like academic papers, medical reports, and financial statements, complemented by integrated internet search capabilities. Beyond analytical tasks, YOYO supports innovative conversational AI interactions, including language practice, simulated business negotiations, and immersive role-playing exercises. Furthermore, the Qwen-VL vision model empowers YOYO with real-time visual processing, enabling the recognition of surrounding architecture, landmarks, weather conditions, and even cuisine captured by the device’s camera.

A key highlight of this partnership is the embedding of specialized AI agents from Alibaba’s popular platforms, Fliggy (travel) and Amap (mobile digital map and navigation), directly into the HONOR Magic V5 via the YOYO assistant. This integration allows users to access travel planning and location-based services through natural language interactions. Fliggy’s agent simplifies trip planning and bookings, while Amap offers comprehensive navigation, mobility services, and lifestyle recommendations, all within HONOR’s mobile ecosystem, including its agent store and service recommendation system.

The HONOR Magic V5 itself is positioned as a premium device, touted as the world’s “thinnest and lightest” foldable smartphone. It measures just 8.8 millimeters thick when folded and weighs 217 grams, with prices starting at 8,999 yuan (approximately US$1,256). This launch signifies HONOR’s strategic shift towards becoming an AI hardware company, as stated by CEO James Li Jian.

This deepened partnership aligns squarely with Alibaba’s overarching strategic emphasis on AI development, highlighted in its fiscal year 2025 report, where “AI+Cloud” was identified as a significant growth driver. Alibaba has committed substantial investments, including a planned investment of at least RMB 100 billion (approximately $53 billion) to enhance its cloud and AI infrastructure. The company’s broader AI initiatives include the rapid expansion of its Qwen ecosystem, the development of AI models like “Grape” for early-stage gastric cancer detection, and the expansion of its global cloud footprint with new data centers and a global AI hub in Singapore.

The collaboration also comes amidst a dynamic Chinese smartphone market. While the foldable segment continues to expand, with Chinese vendors shipping 2.84 million foldable smartphones in the first quarter, up 53.1% year-on-year, competition remains fierce. Huawei currently leads the domestic foldable market with a 76.6% share, with HONOR holding a distant second at 9.1%. The integration of advanced AI is seen as a critical differentiator in this competitive landscape, as both companies aim to capture a larger share of the burgeoning AI-powered device market. China’s cloud infrastructure spending also surged by 16% year-over-year to $11.6 billion in the first quarter of 2025, primarily fueled by the accelerating adoption of enterprise artificial intelligence nationwide, underscoring the strategic importance of cloud services in supporting China’s expanding AI capabilities.
