TLDR: Leading cybersecurity experts from Sysdig and BitMEX have issued a stark warning regarding the escalating threat of AI-powered cyberattacks on cryptocurrency and cloud environments. They highlight that artificial intelligence is not only accelerating attack vectors but also fundamentally altering the landscape of digital defense, with privacy and trust being paramount risks.
Artificial intelligence is rapidly emerging as the most transformative and destabilizing force in the realm of cybersecurity, with cryptocurrency and cloud platforms currently facing the most acute threats. This urgent warning comes from an exclusive joint interview with Sergej Epp, CISO at Sysdig, and Florian Bielak, CISO at BitMEX, conducted during the Sysdig Accelerate ’25 event in Sydney.
Both CISOs underscored that AI is not merely speeding up existing attack methods but is profoundly reshaping the foundational principles of how digital defenses must be constructed, scaled, and maintained with trust. Florian Bielak of BitMEX emphasized the critical nature of data privacy, stating, “The paramount risk, in my view, is privacy.” He further elaborated on the severe consequences of a breach for cryptocurrency exchanges, noting, “A successful breach would lead to an immediate and catastrophic loss of customer trust.”
BitMEX, in response to these evolving threats, actively engages in collaborations with trusted third-party partners and participates in threat intelligence sharing initiatives with other prominent cryptocurrency platforms. Bielak expressed growing concern over the increasing sophistication of opportunistic attackers, who are now significantly empowered by readily accessible AI tools. He stressed that “Security strategies must now account for the entire spectrum of adversaries, from AI-augmented opportunistic actors to well-resourced nation-state actors.”
Sergej Epp of Sysdig characterized the security environment confronting crypto firms as a “continuous, high-stakes game.” He highlighted a sharp increase in “crypto-jacking,” which involves the unauthorized use of GPU cloud resources for cryptocurrency mining. “You can mine very effectively if you’re mining on a GPU,” Epp explained, adding, “Because of the explosion of GPU clouds right now, we call it crypto-jacking.”
The experts detailed how AI tools can be weaponized through various sophisticated technologies, including steganography and advanced audio processing, capabilities that far surpass traditional security checks and balances. This development places escalating pressure on security teams to meticulously manage and curate permitted tools within their operational environments and to rigorously vet the security posture of all third-party vendors and AI partners. This challenge is particularly pronounced for cryptocurrency platforms like BitMEX, which operate continuously within highly adversarial threat landscapes.

Both CISOs concurred that the fundamental rules governing cloud and crypto security are being rewritten in real-time. They observed that both attackers and defenders are deploying increasingly advanced AI tools at an accelerating pace. Bielak concluded by projecting the future impact of AI, stating, “Progressively, a lot of what is mundane today is going to be fully automated with AI.”
