Agentic AI Projects Face Significant Hurdles, Gartner Predicts Over 40% Will Fail by 2027

A new forecast from leading technology research firm Gartner indicates a challenging future for agentic AI projects, predicting that over 40% of them will be canceled by the end of 2027. The primary reasons cited for this anticipated wave of failures include escalating costs, an unclear demonstration of business value, and inadequate risk controls.

Announced on June 25, 2025, during an analysis of emerging AI trends, this prediction highlights a critical issue in the burgeoning field of autonomous AI systems. Anushree Verma, Senior Director Analyst at Gartner, emphasized the experimental nature of many current projects. “Most agentic AI projects right now are early stage experiments or proof of concepts that are mostly driven by hype and are often misapplied,” Verma stated. This trend, she noted, often blinds organizations to the true cost and complexity of deploying AI agents at scale, preventing these initiatives from moving beyond initial pilot phases into full production deployment.

Further complicating the landscape is what Gartner refers to as ‘agent washing,’ where vendors rebrand existing technologies like chatbots or robotic process automation as agentic AI without genuinely adding substantial autonomous capabilities. Gartner estimates that out of thousands of vendors claiming to offer agentic AI services, only approximately 130 provide genuine agentic functionality.

Investment patterns in agentic AI also reflect this uncertainty. A January 2025 Gartner poll of 3,412 webinar attendees revealed varied organizational approaches: 19% reported significant investments, 42% made conservative investments, 8% had not invested at all, and a substantial 31% were either waiting or unsure about their approach.

Despite these immediate challenges, Gartner maintains a long-term optimistic outlook for agentic AI’s potential. The firm predicts that by 2028, at least 15% of day-to-day work decisions will be made autonomously through agentic AI, a significant increase from virtually none in 2024. Additionally, it expects 33% of enterprise software applications to embed agentic AI by 2028, up from less than 1% today.

To navigate this complex environment, Gartner advises organizations to pursue agentic AI only where it delivers clear value or a measurable return on investment. Integrating AI agents into existing legacy systems can be technically complex and costly, often disrupting workflows and requiring significant modifications. Gartner suggests that in many cases, rethinking workflows from the ground up with agentic AI in mind is the ideal path to successful implementation. Verma further recommended that companies focus on enhancing overall enterprise productivity rather than merely automating routine tasks, advising to start with smaller applications and reserve agentic AI for situations demanding complex decision-making, ensuring a careful balance of cost, quality, speed, and scale.
