Africa’s AI Future: Model Context Protocol Hackathon Launched to Foster Digital Sovereignty

TLDR: The Cortex Hub has launched the MCP Hackathon Africa 2025, a continent-wide initiative to embed African languages, cultures, and priorities into the next generation of Artificial Intelligence. Running from September to November 2025 across over 40 cities, the program aims to empower African developers, researchers, startups, and students to build AI solutions using the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard for delivering locally relevant information to large language models. The hackathon seeks to ensure Africa’s leading role in shaping Artificial General Intelligence infrastructure, reduce dependence on foreign technologies, and safeguard digital sovereignty.

The Cortex Hub has officially announced the launch of the Model Context Protocol (MCP) Hackathon Africa 2025, a groundbreaking initiative set to run from September to November 2025. This continent-wide program is strategically designed to integrate African languages, cultural nuances, and regional priorities into the foundational infrastructure of Artificial Intelligence. The eight-week hackathon will engage developers, researchers, startups, and students across more than 40 cities, fostering the creation of practical AI solutions utilizing the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an emerging open standard. The MCP facilitates the delivery of structured, locally relevant information to large language models, ensuring that AI systems are contextually appropriate for African societies.

The initiative will culminate in a continental showcase in Cape Town on November 11–12, 2025, where top finalists will present their innovations to a global audience of investors, incubators, and technology leaders. This event is not merely a competition but a strategic endeavor to position Africa at the forefront of shaping Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). By actively contributing African languages, legal frameworks, and development priorities to MCP servers, participants will play a crucial role in safeguarding digital sovereignty and reducing the continent’s reliance on proprietary, closed AI technologies.

Innovation tracks within the hackathon will span critical sectors such as telecommunications, financial technology, agriculture, logistics, and public services. Participants will tackle real-world challenges, from empowering smallholder farmers with vital real-time information to enhancing secure payment systems and designing efficient cross-border trade logistics platforms.

A total prize pool of $9,500 USD has been allocated, with a grand prize of $5,000 USD for the best overall solution, $3,500 USD for outstanding innovation, and $1,000 USD for excellence in execution. Winners will also gain significant exposure at AfricaCom, a prominent technology event on the continent, where they will have the opportunity to present their work to key industry stakeholders.

Andile Ngcaba, Patron of The Cortex Hub, emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating, “The Model Context Protocol is Africa’s opportunity to move from being consumers of AI to creators of the standards that govern it. By coding MCP servers for our towns and cities, participants will be embedding African contexts, cultures, and priorities into the very fabric of AI’s evolution.”
