Accra, Ghana – The African Technology Forum (ATF) successfully concluded its 2025 AI Challenge Awards Ceremony at the University of Ghana, Accra, on November 4, 2025. The event underscored Africa’s burgeoning capabilities in technology and innovation, celebrating young minds who are leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to address pressing healthcare challenges across the continent.
Under the theme ‘From Problem to Prototype: The Future of Healthcare Innovation,’ the challenge tasked participants with developing AI-powered solutions based on real-world problem statements submitted by prominent health institutions, including Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and 37 Military Hospital. The primary objective was to foster innovations that enhance service delivery, mitigate bottlenecks, and bolster healthcare systems in Ghana.
The ATF, a not-for-profit organization established in 1988, is dedicated to advancing science and technology throughout Africa. Through extensive research, publications, and strategic partnerships, it has cultivated a global network of scientists, innovators, and professionals spanning Africa, Europe, and the Americas.
Following an intensive period of training, mentorship, and technical development, ten finalist teams were longlisted, with five exceptional projects receiving top honors at the awards ceremony. These projects were recognized for their ingenuity, potential impact, and scalability.
Among the distinguished winners was ‘Team Trailblazers,’ who presented ‘NeuroQueue.’ This innovative AI-driven Outpatient Department (OPD) scheduling and patient flow management system was specifically designed to combat inefficiencies prevalent in manual scheduling, prolonged waiting times, overcrowding, inadequate prioritization of vulnerable patients at the Korle Bu Neurological Centre. NeuroQueue integrates online patient registration with OTP verification, employs AI-powered batch scheduling using Groq/LLaMA models, and incorporates intelligent triage to assign priority.
The 2025 challenge marked a significant expansion for the program. In 2024, the initiative engaged 450 participants from 23 universities in Ghana. By 2025, it had grown to include 1,000 participants from both Ghana and Nigeria, strengthening industry collaborations and broadening its regional influence. The ATF continues to attract institutional and industry partners keen on exploring how AI can improve various sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, education, and transportation across Africa. The forum actively encourages organizations to support this vital initiative through funding, mentorship, and technical collaboration to maximize its impact continent-wide.
