Aeroporti di Roma Unveils AI Virtual Assistant to Revolutionize Passenger Journeys at Fiumicino Airport

TLDR: Aeroporti di Roma (ADR) has launched an advanced AI-powered Virtual Assistant at Rome Fiumicino Airport, developed in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Storm Reply. This digital companion, leveraging generative AI and Amazon Bedrock, offers real-time information on flights, baggage, transportation, and personalized services, aiming to enhance the travel experience for approximately 50 million annual passengers.

Aeroporti di Roma (ADR) has announced the deployment of a sophisticated AI-powered Virtual Assistant, set to transform the passenger experience at Rome Fiumicino Airport. This innovative digital companion, a result of collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and AWS Premier Consulting Partner Storm Reply, is designed to provide real-time information and support to the millions of travelers passing through the airport each year.

The Virtual Assistant, which is accessible via ADR’s WhatsApp Chatbot and its official website (www.adr.it), aims to streamline the entire airport journey. It offers quick and easy access to crucial travel details, including real-time flight updates, baggage claim information, and guidance on various airport services. Passengers can also receive personalized recommendations for restaurants, shops, and other amenities within the terminals. The assistant, featuring ADR’s official mascot ADRYX, also provides information on parking availability, transportation options to and from the airport, and personalized assistance for connecting flights.

Emanuele Calà, Senior Vice President Transformation & Technology at Aeroporti di Roma, emphasized the company’s commitment to a seamless travel experience. “From the first ‘Buongiorno’ to the final ‘Arrivederci’, we are committed to offering a smooth travel experience that blends Italian hospitality with technological innovation,” said Calà. He added that the Virtual Assistant is a “significant milestone in our digital transformation journey, enabling us to provide personalized support to the roughly 50 million travelers who pass through our airports each year, ensuring that their first and last moments in contact with the city are comfortable and effortless.”

The technological backbone of this solution is built on generative AI, leveraging the expertise of the AWS Generative AI Innovation Center and Storm Reply. It is powered by Amazon Bedrock, AWS’s fully managed service for foundation models, and employs a multi-agent architecture. This advanced setup enables the assistant to comprehend and respond to complex passenger queries in multiple languages, ensuring secure, high-quality, and privacy-compliant AI-driven interactions.

Filippo Rizzante, Chief Technology Officer at Reply, highlighted the practical application of AI. “The AI-powered Assistant is a distinctive example of how artificial intelligence can seamlessly integrate into users’ everyday experiences, providing powerful yet discreet contextual support to travelers,” Rizzante stated. He further noted that the combination of multi-agent orchestration with AWS generative AI services allows for the secure and efficient management of complex real-time queries across various languages and contexts, ultimately enhancing both operational efficiency and passenger experience at a high-traffic hub like Fiumicino.

Julien Groues, VP AWS France and Europe South, commented on the broader industry impact. “The travel industry is undergoing a revolution driven by artificial intelligence and cloud technologies,” said Groues. He believes ADR’s Virtual Assistant exemplifies how generative AI can profoundly transform passenger experiences by merging ADR’s deep understanding of traveler needs with AWS’s advanced AI capabilities and Storm Reply’s implementation expertise.
