Advertising Industry Awards Implement Stricter AI Guidelines Following Cannes Controversies

TLDR: Major advertising awards, notably the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, are rapidly adopting more stringent rules regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence in submissions. This move comes in response to significant controversies and discussions that emerged from the 2025 Cannes festival, including instances of AI misuse and manipulated content in award-winning campaigns. The new measures aim to ensure factual representation, ethical AI use, and maintain the integrity of the awards.

The advertising industry’s premier awards bodies are moving swiftly to tighten regulations on Artificial Intelligence (AI) usage in creative submissions, a direct consequence of the controversies that marred the 2025 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. The festival, a benchmark for global advertising excellence, faced accusations of misrepresentation, AI misuse, and greenwashing, prompting a decisive response from organizers.

A pivotal incident that spurred these changes involved Brazilian agency DM9. The agency’s Creative Data Grand Prix for its ‘Efficient Way to Pay’ campaign was controversially withdrawn from the 2025 Cannes Lions. An investigation revealed that DM9 had utilized AI-generated and manipulated content within its entry, specifically to simulate real-world events and campaign outcomes. This included the unauthorized use and alteration of CNN Brasil broadcast footage to falsely depict media coverage of their campaign. CNN Brasil subsequently filed a formal complaint, triggering a thorough review by Cannes Lions, supported by independent auditors. DM9 acknowledged ‘serious inconsistencies’ in three of its entries, leading to the withdrawal of ‘Efficient Way to Pay,’ ‘Plastic Blood’ for OKA Biotech, and ‘Gold = Death’ for Urihi Yanomami, along with all associated awards. The fallout also led to the resignation of DM9 co-president and chief creative officer Icaro Doria, and the agency announced internal reforms, including the establishment of an AI Ethics Committee.

In response to these challenges, Cannes Lions has announced a comprehensive suite of new measures designed to bolster entry requirements and review processes for the AI era. These include:

Revised Code of Conduct: All entrants are now required to sign an updated Code of Conduct.

Mandatory AI Disclosure: Entrants must explicitly disclose the use of AI in their submission materials. Failure to do so will result in disqualification or withdrawal of awards.

Content Detection Tools: The festival will employ advanced content detection tools to identify AI-generated or manipulated material.

Adjudication Committee: An expert adjudication committee, specializing in AI, ethics, and content integrity, will be established to oversee cases.

Formal Enforcement Procedures: Stricter enforcement procedures, including public disclosure and award revocation, will be implemented for future breaches.
