Apple Eyes Secretive Prompt AI Acquisition to Accelerate iPhone’s AI Evolution

TLDR: Apple is reportedly in advanced negotiations to acquire Prompt AI, a discreet artificial intelligence startup, primarily for its specialized eleven-person team and cutting-edge computer vision technology. This strategic ‘acqui-hire’ aims to bolster Apple’s AI capabilities for the iPhone, addressing concerns that the tech giant is trailing competitors in the AI race, with its anticipated next-generation Siri update pushed back to 2026. Prompt AI’s existing product, a security camera application called Seemour, is reportedly not Apple’s main interest, and the startup is considering its discontinuation.

Cupertino, California – In a significant move to bridge the perceived gap in the fiercely competitive artificial intelligence landscape, Apple Inc. is reportedly in advanced discussions to acquire Prompt AI, a relatively unknown AI startup. The potential acquisition, widely characterized as an ‘acqui-hire,’ underscores Apple’s urgency to accelerate its AI roadmap, particularly for its flagship iPhone devices.

Industry observers have noted that Apple appears to be lagging behind rivals in the rapid deployment of generative AI features. While competitors are integrating sophisticated AI capabilities into their products, Apple’s much-anticipated next-generation Siri, initially announced for 2024, is now not expected to debut until 2026 due to internal development hurdles.

Prompt AI, founded in 2023, is known for its application called Seemour, which leverages AI for security cameras to detect specific people, pets, and objects, sending alerts and providing text-based descriptions of unusual activity. However, sources familiar with the negotiations indicate that Apple’s primary interest lies not in the Seemour application itself, but rather in Prompt AI’s compact yet highly skilled eleven-person team and their expertise in computer vision technology. Reports suggest that Prompt AI is already contemplating discontinuing Seemour, further highlighting Apple’s focus on talent and core technology.

This strategy aligns with Apple’s historical approach of acquiring smaller companies to integrate talent and intellectual property, thereby fast-tracking its development in critical areas. The acquisition is expected to significantly enhance Apple Intelligence’s visual processing capabilities, paving the way for advanced features in areas such as photo editing, augmented reality, smart home security, and edge AI analysis.

While the financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, some reports suggest that Apple has successfully outbid other tech giants, including companies associated with Elon Musk, to secure Prompt AI. Prompt AI’s leadership has reportedly informed employees about the impending agreement, with provisions for those not joining Apple to receive reduced salaries and opportunities to apply for other open positions within the larger company. Investors, however, are not expected to be ‘made whole’ in the transaction.

CEO Tim Cook has previously affirmed Apple’s openness to mergers and acquisitions that can accelerate its AI initiatives, a sentiment that this potential deal strongly reflects. As Apple continues internal prototype testing of its own AI technology, the integration of Prompt AI’s specialized team is poised to be a crucial step in redefining the AI experience across its ecosystem.
