TLDR: All Nippon Airways (ANA) has become the world’s first airline to integrate an advanced AI-based turbulence prediction service, developed in collaboration with BlueWX Company Limited and Keio University. This innovative platform, boasting an 86% accuracy rate, aims to significantly enhance flight safety, improve passenger comfort, and boost operational reliability by proactively identifying and mitigating turbulence.
All Nippon Airways (ANA) has taken a monumental leap in aviation safety and passenger experience by becoming the first airline globally to implement an artificial intelligence (AI)-based turbulence prediction service. This groundbreaking system, developed by BlueWX Company Limited in partnership with ANA and Keio University, is set to redefine air travel by significantly reducing the impact of turbulence.
The new AI platform leverages sophisticated deep learning techniques and a comprehensive dataset spanning a decade of turbulence information. After several years of rigorous testing and validation, including operational trials involving 2,500 ANA pilots, the system has demonstrated an impressive 86% accuracy rate. This high level of precision has led to its formal integration into ANA’s weather data infrastructure, marking a crucial advancement in aviation technology.
Hiroyuki Kometani, Executive Vice President of Operation Division at ANA, emphasized the significance of this development. “For airlines, turbulence prediction is a longstanding challenge,” Kometani stated. “At ANA, we have successfully developed this capability in collaboration with BlueWX, utilising the latest AI and deep learning techniques. The implementation of this new system will ensure a more reliable and comfortable air travel experience for all our passengers.”
The development of this turbulence prediction system began in 2019 as a joint initiative between ANA and Keio University. Trial use commenced in 2021, with continuous updates consistently improving the model’s accuracy and performance. ANA pilots have expressed strong support for its continued use, citing its superior accuracy compared to traditional methods and its effectiveness in real-world flight operations.
This innovation comes at a critical juncture for the aviation industry, as turbulence remains a significant challenge. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), turbulence is responsible for 30% to 50% of all aviation incidents. Beyond safety concerns, turbulence also leads to substantial economic losses, including damage to cargo and equipment, as well as flight delays and cancellations due to unscheduled safety inspections.
BlueWX, established in July 2023 as an industry-academia collaboration, specializes in AI-driven weather forecasting solutions. Kaz Watanabe, Chief Executive Officer of BlueWX, highlighted the increasing severity of turbulence. “As turbulence exacerbates due partly to ongoing global warming and becomes a major safety concern for the air transport industry, we are honoured to start providing our leading-edge, AI-powered turbulence prediction for ANA flight operations,” Watanabe commented. He added that ANA’s decision to adopt their service underscores its accuracy and reliability, expressing anticipation for its contribution to the safety and comfort of crews and passengers worldwide.
