Perplexity AI Surges Ahead of Arattai in India’s Competitive App Market

TLDR: Perplexity AI has claimed the top spot as the most downloaded free app on the Google Play Store in India, surpassing Zoho’s homegrown messaging app Arattai, as well as global giants like ChatGPT and Google Gemini. This highlights the intense competition in India’s rapidly growing AI and mobile app landscape, where local solutions like Arattai, despite strong government backing, face formidable challenges from innovative AI-powered platforms.

New Delhi, India – October 14, 2025 – In a significant shift within India’s burgeoning digital ecosystem, Perplexity AI has emerged as the leading free application on the Google Play Store, signaling a new phase of intense competition among artificial intelligence and messaging platforms. The AI-powered assistant has successfully outranked Zoho’s indigenously developed Arattai messaging app, which had previously enjoyed a rapid ascent, and has also surpassed established global players such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

Perplexity AI’s rapid rise to prominence is attributed to its innovative approach to information retrieval. The application is lauded for its ability to deliver concise, bullet-pointed, and thoroughly cited answers to user queries, a feature that resonates strongly with India’s vast mobile-first user base. Its strategic design, incorporating mobile-first features, multi-language support, and accelerated response times, has been particularly effective in catering to the diverse needs of the Indian market. Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity, confirmed this milestone via a social media announcement, showcasing the app’s top ranking.

Zoho’s Arattai, meaning “chill chat” in Tamil, initially garnered considerable traction, quickly climbing to a high position on the Google Play Store. The app has been a focal point of India’s “Make in India” initiative, receiving robust endorsements from senior government officials, including Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. These endorsements underscore a national push for digital sovereignty and the promotion of homegrown technological solutions. Arattai emphasizes privacy and security, with a commitment to keeping all user data within India, in compliance with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, and operates on a no-ads, no-tracking policy. While it offers end-to-end encryption for calls, Zoho is actively working to implement full end-to-end message encryption to bolster its competitive stance against rivals like WhatsApp.

India represents a critical battleground for AI companies, boasting the world’s second-largest internet and smartphone user base after China. This immense market potential has attracted significant investment and strategic maneuvers from global tech giants. OpenAI, for instance, introduced a low-cost subscription plan in India before expanding it globally, while Amazon-backed Anthropic is establishing local offices and enhancing its Claude AI with multilingual support, including several Indian languages. Perplexity AI has also forged a partnership with Bharti Airtel, India’s second-largest mobile operator, to offer its premium subscription services to customers at no additional cost, further solidifying its market penetration.
