MARC’s core functionality involves automating the culling and initial review decisions, such as identifying privilege, confidentiality, responsiveness, and PII/PHI, before documents are loaded into more expensive traditional review platforms. This ‘behind-the-firewall’ approach allows organizations to keep their data within their own secure environments, thereby minimizing security risks and reducing hosting costs.
The system was first announced in March 2025 and underwent a pilot phase with corporate legal departments. Following successful trials, Altorney is now making MARC broadly available. The company’s initial focus on behind-the-firewall deployment for corporate legal departments was driven by both technical and strategic considerations, aiming to reduce costs and security risks by processing data internally. However, market demand led Altorney to expand its approach, recognizing that internal IT approval processes could be lengthy for some clients.
Altorney was founded in late 2021 by brothers Shimmy and Rachi Messing, initially focusing on a marketplace for legal talent. MARC emerged from a collaboration with Stephen Goldstein, now Altorney’s Chief Product Officer and a seasoned leader in legal technology with over 30 years of experience. Goldstein approached the Messings with his work on using generative AI for first-pass review, leading to the product’s development throughout late 2024 and early 2025. The product’s name, MARC, honors the founders’ late father, Marc Messing, an attorney, rabbi, and educator.
Shimmy Messing described Altorney as a ’boutique coding shop’ dedicated to creating ‘elegant, unconventional legal software’ that addresses persistent pain points in legal work. He stated that MARC is designed to solve real-world challenges faced by corporate legal teams, enabling them to ‘move faster, reduce risk, and make defensible decisions with confidence—all while keeping their data exactly where it belongs.’
MARC integrates seamlessly with existing corporate data infrastructures, including Microsoft 365 Purview, and offers predictable pricing, maximizing the return on legal technology investments.
