TLDR: A fringe political party in Japan, ‘Path to Rebirth,’ has announced its intention to install an artificial intelligence as its new leader. This decision comes after the party’s founder, Shinji Ishimaru, stepped down due to a poor performance in recent elections. The AI’s role will primarily involve resource distribution among members, rather than dictating political activities.
TOKYO – The ‘Path to Rebirth’ party, a relatively new political entity in Japan, has made a groundbreaking announcement: it plans to appoint an artificial intelligence as its new leader. This unconventional move follows the resignation of the party’s founder, Shinji Ishimaru, who stepped down after the party failed to secure any seats in the recent upper house elections.
Established in January by Ishimaru, a former mayor from a small city in western Japan, the ‘Path to Rebirth’ operates without a fixed policy platform, allowing its members the freedom to set their individual agendas. Ishimaru had previously gained unexpected traction, securing second place in the 2024 Tokyo gubernatorial election, largely attributed to a successful online campaign. However, the party’s fortunes reversed in subsequent elections, with all 42 candidates losing in the June Tokyo assembly election and all 10 candidates failing to win seats in the July upper house elections.
Koki Okumura, a 25-year-old doctoral student specializing in AI research at Kyoto University, has been designated as an assistant to the new AI leader and will nominally head the party. During a news conference, Okumura confirmed, ‘The new leader will be AI.’ He further clarified that the specifics of the AI’s implementation and its exact functions are still under discussion. However, it has been stated that the AI will not dictate the political activities of the party’s members. Instead, its primary responsibility will be to manage and distribute the party’s resources among its members.
