TLDR: India is rapidly emerging as a pivotal global hub for AI data centers, fueled by its vast internet subscriber base, a thriving technology sector, and proactive government initiatives. Projections indicate substantial growth in its AI market, expected to reach $20-$22 billion by 2027, and a significant expansion in data center capacity, set to hit 1.8 GW by the same year.
India is on a trajectory to become a global powerhouse for Artificial Intelligence (AI) data centers, driven by the escalating demand for AI-led services. These specialized facilities are crucial for supporting the intensive computational and data requirements of AI and machine learning workloads.
Several key factors underpin India’s pre-eminent position in this evolving ecosystem. Firstly, the nation is projected to boast over 900 million internet subscribers by 2025, creating an immense platform for data consumption. Secondly, India’s robust $280-billion technology industry provides a deep pool of skilled AI professionals. Thirdly, the government’s strong emphasis on AI, coupled with specific policy frameworks, aims to propel the country towards a $1-trillion digital economy by 2028.
A report by global consultancy firm Deloitte, titled ‘Attracting AI Data Centre Infrastructure Investment in India,’ highlights India’s potential to become one of the fastest-growing leaders in AI. The country’s AI market is anticipated to expand significantly, reaching between $20 billion and $22 billion by 2027, demonstrating a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 30 percent. Crucially, India currently generates 20 percent of the world’s data, underscoring its foundational role in the global data landscape.
Neha Aggarwal, Partner, Deloitte India, emphasized this strategic advantage, stating, “India’s strategic location allows it to serve domestic and global markets effectively, positioning it as a critical node in the global data centre ecosystem.” Furthermore, Deloitte projects India to become the second-largest talent base for AI globally, with an estimated 1.25 million to 1.35 million AI professionals by 2027.
However, the journey is not without its challenges. S Anjani Kumar, Partner, Deloitte India, pointed out the need to strengthen research and development, ensure talent availability, and enhance data frameworks. “For India to accelerate its AI capabilities and realise its potential, it is necessary to introduce enabling policies to support the sector. India must develop its AI-ready infrastructure to meet the rising demand for data analytics and processing,” Kumar added.
