Snapchat Introduces ‘Imagine Lens’ for AI-Powered Text-to-Image Creation

TLDR: Snapchat has launched a new ‘Imagine Lens’ feature, enabling Snapchat+ Platinum and Lens+ subscribers to generate custom AI images directly within the app using text prompts. This marks a significant expansion of Snapchat’s generative AI capabilities.

Snapchat, the popular social media platform, has unveiled its latest innovation, the ‘Imagine Lens,’ a groundbreaking feature that allows users to create AI-generated images from simple text prompts. Launched on September 5, 2025, this new Lens is designed to transform the way users interact with the app, offering a powerful text-to-image AI generator directly integrated into the camera interface.

The ‘Imagine Lens’ stands out as Snapchat’s first ‘open prompt image generation Lens,’ providing users with unprecedented creative freedom. Unlike previous AI effects that were limited to specific styles or scenes, this new tool enables users to describe exactly what they want to see, from ‘an image of a fluffy dog’ to ‘turn me into a robot’ or ‘a surreal landscape behind your selfie.’ Users can also leverage pre-made effects and suggestions, such as ‘Turn me into a four to five-panel comic where something unexpected but heroic happens’ or ‘Make me into a funny caricature.’ The prompt can be easily edited in the caption bar, allowing for iterative refinement of the generated image.

Access to this advanced generative AI feature is exclusive to Snapchat+ Platinum and Lens+ subscribers. The subscription costs range from $8.99 to $15.99 monthly, positioning the ‘Imagine Lens’ as a premium offering aimed at driving subscription revenue. Subscribers can find the ‘Imagine Lens’ prominently in the Lens carousel or within the exclusive category of the Snapchat app.

Snapchat has been a proactive adopter of AI technologies, consistently integrating new features into its platform. Prior to the ‘Imagine Lens,’ the company introduced ‘MyAI’ and other image creation tools. Earlier in 2025, Snap Inc. also unveiled its text-to-image AI research model, specifically optimized for mobile devices, capable of generating high-resolution images in approximately 1.4 seconds on an iPhone 16 Pro Max. While the company has not explicitly confirmed if this proprietary model powers the new Lens, it has stated that its Lenses utilize a combination of in-house and industry-leading AI models.

The introduction of the ‘Imagine Lens’ signifies Snapchat’s aggressive push into the generative AI space, intensifying its competition with other social media giants like Meta and TikTok. According to Snap Inc.’s internal data, over 400 million people have used its Gen AI Lenses more than four billion times, highlighting the immense user engagement with AI-powered features. This move not only enhances the creative capabilities for users but also serves as a strategic differentiator and a significant revenue driver for the company.
