TLDR: OpenAI has successfully closed a record $40 billion funding round, primarily led by SoftBank, elevating its valuation to $300 billion. This significant capital injection will fuel its global AI infrastructure expansion, including plans for a massive 1GW data center in India as part of the ‘Stargate’ project, a joint venture with SoftBank and Oracle.
In a monumental move solidifying its leadership in the global artificial intelligence market, OpenAI has announced the successful closure of a $40 billion funding round. This landmark investment, predominantly led by Japan’s SoftBank Group, pushes OpenAI’s post-money valuation to an impressive $300 billion, with a pre-money valuation of $260 billion. The deal, which also saw participation from key investors including Microsoft, Coatue, Altimeter, and Thrive, marks the largest private capital funding round in the history of the technology sector.
The funding is structured in two stages: an initial $10 billion tranche was disbursed in April 2025, with the remaining $30 billion contingent upon OpenAI’s conversion to a fully for-profit public benefit corporation by the end of 2025 or early 2026. This restructuring is crucial for unlocking the full investment potential.
A significant portion of this new capital, approximately $18 billion, is earmarked for the ambitious ‘Stargate’ infrastructure project. This initiative, a joint venture with SoftBank and Oracle, aims to establish a vast network of AI data centers across the United States and globally.
As part of this global expansion, OpenAI is reportedly planning to build a substantial 1-gigawatt (GW) capacity data center in India. This strategic decision is influenced by India being home to the highest number of students utilizing ChatGPT, OpenAI’s flagship generative AI model. The company recently introduced a more affordable subscription model in India, priced at just $5 per month, compared to $20 in the US, to further attract users.
SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son has articulated his company’s mission to achieve Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI) that surpasses human intelligence, identifying OpenAI as the partner closest to realizing this goal. OpenAI itself stated that the funding will enable it to ‘push the frontiers of AI research even further, scale our compute infrastructure, and deliver increasingly powerful tools’ to its expanding user base.
ChatGPT currently boasts an impressive 500 million weekly users, a significant increase from 400 million just the previous month. The company projects its revenue to more than triple in 2025, reaching an estimated $12.7 billion.

In a notable strategic shift, OpenAI also announced plans to develop a more open generative AI model. This move comes as the company faces intensifying competition in the open-source AI space from rivals such as China’s DeepSeek and Meta, signaling a potential evolution in its approach to AI development and deployment.
