Dubai has announced a significant new initiative in the realm of artificial intelligence and creative arts: a $1 million global award for short films produced entirely by artificial intelligence. This pioneering competition is being launched in collaboration with Google’s advanced AI model, Gemini, and is a key highlight of the upcoming 1 Billion Followers Summit. The summit is set to convene its fourth edition in Dubai from January 9 to 11, 2026.
The prestigious award seeks to recognize excellence in AI-generated cinematic content. The winning short film will receive a substantial cash prize of $1 million, and the top ten films selected from the entries will be showcased during the summit. This event is organized by the UAE Media Government Office, which stated that the primary goal of the contest is to underscore the transformative capabilities of artificial intelligence within the filmmaking industry.
Entries to the competition must be exclusively generated using AI tools. The judging process will focus on several critical criteria, including the quality of storytelling, the innovative and creative application of AI technologies, the technical proficiency of the film’s execution, and its capacity to convey a compelling humanitarian message. Further specifics regarding the competition, including submission guidelines and deadlines, are expected to be released next month.
In an official statement, the UAE Media Government Office articulated the broader vision behind this initiative: “The Summit aims to support and encourage the production of purposeful films using diverse AI tools, raise awareness of the humanitarian messages such films should convey, and enhance creative capabilities, aesthetic vision, and advanced skills in integrating AI into film production.”
Mohammad Al-Gergawi, the UAE Minister of Cabinet Affairs, emphasized the strategic importance of such ventures for the nation’s economic future. He stated that the summit is integral to the UAE’s ongoing efforts to stimulate and lead the ‘content economy’. Al-Gergawi remarked, “The content economy is an economic power with limitless horizons. Today, the UAE is not only keeping pace with its developments but is also leading and charting new directions within that economy.”
