Google Introduces Gemini-Powered AI Health Coach for Fitbit, Redesigned App Set for October Launch

TLDR: Google has announced an AI-powered personal health coach for Fitbit, leveraging its Gemini model. This new feature, launching as a preview in October for Fitbit Premium subscribers in the US, will act as a comprehensive fitness trainer, sleep expert, and wellness advisor. It will be integrated into a completely redesigned Fitbit app, offering dynamic, personalized plans and enhanced data management, with a strong emphasis on user privacy and the disclaimer that it is not a medical device.

Google is set to revolutionize personal wellness with the introduction of an AI-powered health coach for Fitbit, built on its advanced Gemini model. This innovative feature, unveiled at the ‘Made by Google 2025’ event, is slated to launch in October as an exclusive preview for adult Fitbit Premium subscribers in the United States. The AI coach aims to serve as a multifaceted personal advisor, combining the roles of a fitness trainer, sleep coach, and general wellness guide.

According to Andy Abramson, Fitbit’s head of product, this AI coach signifies a ‘paradigm shift’ in how artificial intelligence can monitor, analyze, and guide health decisions. “Our new AI-powered personal health coach is a fitness trainer, a sleep coach, and a health and wellness adviser, all working together to help you be your best, whether that means maximizing performance on the court, in the office, or at home with family,” Abramson stated. The system is designed to continuously adapt based on individual health metrics and real-life circumstances, creating a truly personalized experience.

The capabilities of the new AI coach are extensive. It will generate dynamic workout and recovery plans tailored to user goals and real-time performance data. For instance, if a user’s ‘Readiness Score’ drops due to insufficient sleep, the coach might suggest adjusting their weekly routine. Revolutionary sleep algorithms will provide deep insights into rest quality and patterns, even offering adaptive sleep schedules to combat issues like jet lag. Users will also be able to ask personalized health-related questions, receiving answers informed by data from their Fitbit devices, Pixel Watch, and compatible third-party health trackers.

This new AI coach will be seamlessly integrated into a completely redesigned Fitbit application. The updated app will feature improved navigation, enhanced data visualization, better syncing between devices, and a long-awaited dark mode functionality. Google has also committed to expanding third-party integrations, with plans to pull more data from apps like Strava via the Health Connect platform and finally support Apple’s HealthKit.

Google emphasizes that while powerful, the AI health coach is not a medical device, and users should consult healthcare professionals for medical advice. Data privacy is a key concern, with Google assuring users that their health data will be stored separately from other Google data and will not be used for Google ads. The company has also partnered with NBA star Stephen Curry and his performance team for more accurate results and has published a paper in Nature on a personal health large language model for sleep and fitness coaching, underscoring the scientific backing behind the new offering. Fitbit Premium users can sign up now to be notified when the preview becomes available.
