TLDR: Aalo Atomics, an Austin-based nuclear energy startup, has successfully raised $100 million in Series B funding, bringing its total funding to over $136 million. The capital will accelerate the development and deployment of its modular microreactors, specifically designed to meet the escalating energy demands of AI data centers. The company aims to achieve zero-power criticality for its first 50 MW reactor, ‘Aalo-X,’ by July 2026 at Idaho National Laboratory.
Aalo Atomics, a pioneering nuclear energy startup based in Austin, Texas, has announced the successful closure of a $100 million Series B funding round. This significant investment boosts the company’s total funding to over $136 million to date, underscoring strong investor confidence in its mission to provide sustainable and scalable energy solutions for the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence sector. The funding round was spearheaded by Valor Equity Partners, with notable participation from a diverse group of investors including Fine Structure Ventures, Hitachi Ventures, NRG Energy, Vamos Ventures, Tishman Speyer, Kindred Ventures, 50Y, Harpoon Ventures, CE-Ventures, Crosscut Ventures, and even the investment offices of tech luminaries Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, alongside Nvidia’s venture capital unit.
The primary objective of this substantial capital injection is to accelerate the development and deployment of Aalo’s innovative modular microreactors, which are specifically engineered to power the burgeoning AI data centers. The company, incorporated in 2022, has already gained significant traction, including its selection by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for a fast-tracked testing program for its advanced nuclear technology.
A key project on the horizon is the construction of Aalo’s first 50-megawatt (MW) reactor, dubbed ‘Aalo-X,’ which is slated to achieve zero-power criticality by next summer, specifically July 2026, at the Idaho National Laboratory. This ambitious timeline is part of a broader U.S. Department of Energy pilot program aimed at accelerating advanced nuclear deployment. The Aalo-X plant will feature a single turbine connected to five 10 MW Aalo-1 reactors.
The Aalo-1 reactor design is derived from the Idaho National Laboratory’s MARVEL project and utilizes readily available materials such as steel and standard turbines, facilitating mass production. Aalo Atomics projects the capability to build over 100 Aalo-1 reactors annually. A groundbreaking aspect of their strategy involves co-locating an experimental data center directly alongside the Aalo-X test plant, creating a first-of-its-kind demonstration of nuclear power directly fueling AI infrastructure.
Looking ahead, Aalo Atomics has plans for a new reactor design that will offer ten times the power capacity of the Aalo-1. The company also highlights the potential for remarkable cost efficiency, with electricity costs projected to reach as low as $0.03 per kilowatt-hour, a rate competitive with large-scale solar farms.

This investment comes at a critical juncture, as the demand for energy from AI data centers continues to surge. Sudarshan Pareek, Senior Vice President at CE-Ventures, emphasized this point, stating, “The surge in AI adoption is driving unprecedented demand for reliable energy, and nuclear power can play a crucial role in meeting this demand with clean, scalable solutions.” To meet its ambitious goals and the growing market need, Aalo Atomics plans to double its current 60-person team, scaling up its manufacturing capabilities to rapidly deploy safe, mass-produced nuclear units.
