Despite CIO Advocacy, AI Adoption in India Remains Nascent with 92% in Pilot Phases

TLDR: Indian Chief Information Officers (CIOs) are actively promoting AI as a strategic priority for boardrooms, yet the widespread adoption and maturity of AI across Indian enterprises remain low, with a significant majority still in experimental or pilot stages.

According to the ETCIO Intelligence Report AI Playbook – GPUs, Strategies & Readiness Index 2025, a staggering 92% of Indian organizations are still in the pilot or exploratory phases of AI implementation, with only a slim 8% having fully deployed AI initiatives. This significant gap reveals a crucial reality: while AI is a key discussion point in boardrooms, its large-scale operationalization remains a formidable challenge for most Indian businesses.

The report highlights that despite AI’s status as a ‘boardroom buzzword,’ only a small percentage of enterprises have successfully achieved business-scale AI value. While sectors like BFSI (71%) and ITES (80%) exhibit some progress in AI maturity, they still encounter difficulties with integration and governance. Similarly, healthcare and retail sectors show over 60% AI experimentation, but their advancement is frequently hampered by concerns related to governance, ethics, and backend integration.

Industry leaders stress that effective AI transformation goes beyond isolated pilot projects, advocating for a ‘platformization’ strategy. This approach involves establishing AI Centers of Excellence, creating explainable AI systems, and investing in robust, scalable data infrastructure. As Rucha Nanavati of Mahindra & Mahindra noted, ‘AI has moved from curiosity to boardroom mandate. The challenge now is not in adopting AI—but in delivering on its promise.’ This statement perfectly encapsulates the current AI landscape in India, where ambitious goals for AI adoption are prevalent, but practical implementation and scaling face considerable hurdles.
