TLDR: BBVA is significantly expanding its collaboration with Google Cloud, deploying Google Workspace with Gemini to over 100,000 employees globally. This initiative aims to enhance productivity, foster innovation, and streamline operations by leveraging generative AI tools, building on a decade-long digital transformation journey and previous successful AI adoptions.
Madrid, Spain – BBVA, a leading global financial institution, has announced a significant deepening of its long-standing partnership with Google Cloud, focusing on the widespread integration of artificial intelligence across its global operations. This strategic move will see the deployment of Google Workspace with Gemini to more than 100,000 BBVA employees worldwide, marking a pivotal step in the bank’s comprehensive AI adoption strategy.
The expanded collaboration aims to empower BBVA’s workforce with advanced generative AI capabilities embedded within their daily productivity tools, including Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Sheets. Beyond the integrated Workspace features, employees will also gain access to the standalone Gemini app and NotebookLM, an AI-powered research and writing assistant, to facilitate a wide array of tasks from summarizing and drafting to in-depth research and report generation.
Internal data from BBVA indicates the tangible benefits of AI integration. Employees currently leveraging AI tools report an average saving of nearly three hours per week by automating repetitive tasks. This efficiency gain frees up valuable time, allowing staff to focus on more strategic, customer-focused initiatives and complex problem-solving. The bank anticipates that the widespread adoption of Gemini will further amplify these productivity improvements and significantly boost innovation across all departments.
Elena Alfaro, Global Head of AI Adoption at BBVA, emphasized the strategic importance of this partnership, stating, “The partnership with Google Cloud allows us to continue transforming how our teams work, make decisions, and collaborate—using the most competitive generative AI models on the market. We anticipate that Gemini with Workspace has the potential to simplify tasks and spark new ideas, which will significantly boost the productivity and innovation of our teams.”
Juan Ortigosa, Global Head of Workplace at BBVA, added, “BBVA transformed the way we work with Google Workspace more than ten years ago. We expect that the widespread adoption of generative AI across these tools will improve productivity and the work experience of all employees, regardless of their role, fostering a more dynamic and efficient environment.”
This initiative builds upon BBVA’s extensive history of digital transformation with Google Cloud, a collaboration that began in 2011. It also follows BBVA’s earlier successful foray into generative AI, which saw the bank deploy ChatGPT Enterprise licenses to 11,000 employees by May 2025, with 83% of licensed users engaging with the tool daily.
To ensure responsible and secure AI adoption, BBVA has launched a mandatory training program called ‘AI Express.’ This program provides employees with clear principles for ethical AI use, aligning with the European Union’s AI Act and BBVA’s stringent internal policies on data protection and confidentiality. Access to the new Google AI tools will be granted upon completion of this essential training.
Isaac Hernandez, Country Manager Iberia, Google Cloud, underscored the significance of the partnership: “This expanded partnership with BBVA underscores the transformative power of generative AI in the enterprise. Google Cloud is committed to providing the most advanced AI tools, like Gemini, to help industry leaders like BBVA unlock new levels of innovation and efficiency. We have been a proud partner of BBVA’s digital transformation journey for years, and we believe that this deployment of Gemini with Workspace will further empower their teams and redefine the future of banking.”
