Argonne Scientists Recognized for Pioneering AI in Solar Cell Innovation

Argonne National Laboratory scientists, as part of a distinguished international collaboration, have been honored with the prestigious 2025 Royal Society of Chemistry’s Materials Chemistry Horizon Prize. This accolade recognizes their transformative advancements in developing chemistry-aware artificial intelligence (AI) software, which has dramatically accelerated the discovery process for solar cell materials and is poised to redefine the field of materials science.

The award-winning team comprises 11 members from Argonne National Laboratory, alongside partners from the University of Cambridge, STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, the Australian National Science and Technology Organisation, and other global institutions. Their collective efforts have led to the creation of innovative AI tools that have streamlined the identification of promising new materials for solar energy applications.

Central to their breakthrough is the strategic integration of AI with high-performance computing. The scientists leveraged powerful supercomputers, such as the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility’s (ALCF) Aurora, to execute rapid, detailed, and comprehensive AI predictions. These predictions focused on critical material properties, including molecular structure, polarity, and light absorption. The AI-generated insights were subsequently validated through rigorous laboratory experiments and device testing, confirming the efficacy of their computational approach.

Álvaro Vázquez-Mayagoitia, a computational scientist at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility, underscored the significance of this collaborative achievement, stating, “This recognition is a testament to the power of international partnership and innovation.
