Leading Aviation and Tech Firms Convene on Agentic AI’s Impact on Future Travel

TLDR: Representatives from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG), Lufthansa Group, Aeroporti di Roma (ADR), Fraport, and DataArt recently gathered to explore the profound implications and applications of agentic artificial intelligence in shaping the future of the travel experience. The discussions highlighted the transformative potential of advanced autonomy and the industry’s progression towards Artificial General Intelligence, aiming to enhance efficiency, punctuality, and customer service.

A significant gathering of key players in the aviation and technology sectors, including Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG), Lufthansa Group, Aeroporti di Roma (ADR), Fraport, and DataArt, recently took place to delve into the burgeoning field of agentic artificial intelligence and its anticipated impact on the travel experience. The discussions centered on the transformative potential of advanced autonomous systems and the industry’s trajectory towards Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

Agentic AI, characterized by its ability to act autonomously in dynamic environments, is seen as a crucial element in revolutionizing various aspects of travel. The conversation underscored how such technologies could lead to more efficient operations, improved punctuality, and a significantly enhanced customer journey.

DataArt, a global technology consultancy, has been actively involved in leveraging AI to improve customer experience in the air travel industry. Their work focuses on transforming fragmented support into responsive, seamless service through data-driven insights and AI-powered tools. DataArt’s proprietary TRAG Accelerator, combined with platforms like Amazon Bedrock and models such as AI21 Jurassic and Anthropic’s Claude, are being utilized to classify requests, generate responses, and streamline customer interactions, routing complex queries to human agents when necessary.

Lufthansa Group Airlines are also at the forefront of integrating digital functions and AI to optimize the travel experience. A notable initiative involves AI-supported ground processes at Frankfurt Airport (FRA), a collaboration between Lufthansa, Fraport, and zeroG, a Lufthansa subsidiary. This partnership has introduced an innovative, AI-based camera solution called ‘seer’. The ‘seer’ system records every step of the aircraft handling process, from docking to refueling, automatically timestamping each action. This real-time data collection enhances the quantity and quality of information, creating a ‘single source of truth’ for operational transparency.

Jens Ritter, CEO of Lufthansa Airlines, emphasized the benefits of these advancements, stating, “Transparent ground processes enable us to further improve our punctuality and service quality. This benefits our guests in particular. That is why we are working intensively on modernising our operational processes with innovative technologies such as the AI-based ‘seer’ solution.” He added that shared handling data among partners at Frankfurt Airport could lead to greater efficiency and punctuality. The ‘seer’ system, which began its development and pilot phase in 2023 and was tested from February to May 2024, is currently operational at five aircraft parking positions at Frankfurt Airport, with plans to expand to 20 positions by the end of Q3 2025, followed by a comprehensive rollout.
