WPP Media Embraces AI Era with Rebrand and Integrated Approach in MENA

TLDR: WPP Media, formerly GroupM, has rebranded to WPP Media, signaling a fundamental shift towards an AI-powered, integrated media company. This move, discussed by MENA CEO Amer El Hajj, aims to leverage AI for deeper consumer understanding, automated media buying, personalized content, and predictive campaign performance, reflecting the evolving demands of clients in the AI era.

Multinational advertising network WPP’s media-investment business, GroupM, has officially rebranded to WPP Media, marking a significant evolution into a fully integrated, AI-powered media company. This strategic shift was highlighted by Amer El Hajj, CEO of WPP Media for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, in an interview with Arab News. The rebrand, effective as of late May, signifies a departure from an era where media scale was paramount to the current “AI era where media is everywhere and in everything.”

With over $60 billion in annual media investment and partnerships with more than 75 percent of the world’s leading advertisers across 80+ markets, WPP Media is poised to deliver personalized solutions at scale. A key aspect of this transformation is the deeper integration across its agencies—Mindshare, Wavemaker, and Essence Mediacom—through “WPP Open.” This AI-enabled marketing operating system facilitates seamless collaboration between media, data, production, and creative teams. The agencies will now function as “homes for dedicated client teams,” moving away from separate profit and loss statements to integrated client service teams that share technology, data, and operational functions, while retaining their brand names for client relationships.

El Hajj emphasized that being “AI-driven” means embedding artificial intelligence throughout WPP Media’s operations. This includes analyzing vast datasets for enhanced consumer understanding, automating media buying for greater efficiency, personalizing creative content in high volumes, and predicting campaign performance. AI’s role in planning, buying, and optimizing media campaigns enables real-time bidding, audience prediction, and creative personalization at an unprecedented scale.

The rebrand also addresses the increasing demand from clients for integrated capabilities spanning media, production, and technology. WPP Media aims to reflect this new landscape by emphasizing its AI-driven approach and integration with WPP’s broader creative and technology ecosystem. The company is also developing internal training programs and AI literacy sessions for all employees, including region-specific modules for the MENA market that address local dynamics and cultural considerations.

El Hajj clarified that the focus is on “evolution, not revolution,” asserting that AI enhances human talent rather than replacing it. AI handles monotonous tasks, freeing up human professionals for strategic thinking, relationship building, and creative problem-solving. Clients in the MENA region, particularly in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, are increasingly sophisticated in AI adoption, driven by initiatives like Vision 2030 and digital transformation. El Hajj noted that many regional clients are ahead of some global counterparts in embracing AI for customer experience and operational efficiency, positioning WPP Media to capitalize on Saudi Arabia’s significant AI investment landscape, including its $100 billion AI initiative.
