TLDR: Augment Code has launched its Auggie CLI coding agent, bringing its AI-powered development tool directly to the terminal. This move aims to provide greater automation capabilities for developers, complementing its existing IDE features and a suite of new functionalities.
Augment Code, a prominent player in the AI coding tool landscape, has announced the release of its Auggie CLI coding agent, making its powerful AI capabilities accessible directly within the command-line interface. This strategic expansion is part of the company’s launch week, which also includes significant updates to its context engine, new one-click integrations, and enhanced task list functionalities.
The introduction of the CLI agent marks a notable shift in the trend of coding agents, moving from integrated development environments (IDEs) to the command line. While other companies like Anthropic with Claude Code, Google with Gemini CLI, and OpenAI with Codex CLI have also ventured into this space, Augment Code is distinguishing its offering with a strong emphasis on automation.
Guy Gur-Ari, co-founder of Augment Code, stated in an interview, ‘For us, this is really about the ability to automate, because we want to go beyond the inner loop. We want to go and let developers automate as much of the software development lifecycle as they can.’ This sentiment was echoed by CEO Matt McClernan, who noted the surprising demand from users for CLI-based workflows.
Beyond the interactive mode, which allows developers to provide feedback and iterate with the agent, Augment Code’s CLI agent is positioned as a robust tool for automating various development tasks. This includes the ability for the agent to plan, build, and even open pull requests for review, streamlining the software development lifecycle.
Accompanying the CLI launch are several other key enhancements. The updated context engine can now leverage information from the last 10,000 commits to a branch, providing the AI with a deeper understanding of the codebase. Furthermore, Augment Code has introduced one-click integrations with popular tools such as CircleCI, MongoDB, Redis, Sentry, and Stripe, facilitating seamless workflow integration. Task lists have also been improved, allowing developers to guide the coding agents through multi-step processes more effectively.
