FuriosaAI Secures $125 Million to Advance AI Inference Chip Production

TLDR: South Korean AI chipmaker FuriosaAI has successfully closed a $125 million Series C bridge funding round. This investment aims to significantly boost the production of its energy-efficient RNGD inference chip and support the development of next-generation AI chips, addressing the escalating demand for sustainable AI compute infrastructure.

Seoul, South Korea – FuriosaAI, a prominent semiconductor company specializing in AI compute solutions, announced today the successful completion of a $125 million Series C bridge funding round. This substantial investment is earmarked to accelerate the production of its high-performance, energy-efficient RNGD inference chip and to fuel the development of its upcoming AI chip, designed to meet the rapidly growing global demand for advanced AI infrastructure.

The funding round saw participation from a diverse group of investors, including both new and returning backers such as Korea Development Bank, Industrial Bank of Korea, Keistone Partners, PI Partners, and Kakao Investment.

This latest capital injection brings FuriosaAI’s total funding to $246 million since its inception in 2017, with the company now valued at approximately $735 million.

FuriosaAI is strategically positioned to address the increasing strain on AI infrastructure, particularly as the adoption of generative AI surges. The company aims to provide a viable alternative to the current GPU-centric model, which often faces challenges related to high energy consumption and infrastructure bottlenecks.

According to June Paik, co-founder and CEO of FuriosaAI, “AI today is dependent on a broken business model, where the infrastructure costs and constraints of power-hungry GPUs are a critical, rapidly worsening roadblock. We’re committed to solving this so that AI is truly sustainable – not just environmentally but economically as well.”

The company’s RNGD (pronounced “Renegade”) chip has already demonstrated its competitive edge, delivering 2.25 times better large language model inference performance per watt compared to traditional GPUs. This superior performance recently led to a significant design win with LG AI Research.
