Generative AI Applications See Explosive Growth in Early 2025, Revenue and Downloads Soar

TLDR: Generative AI applications have experienced remarkable growth in the first half of 2025, with downloads reaching 1.7 billion and in-app revenue doubling to $1.87 billion, according to a Sensor Tower report. This surge signifies a major shift towards integrating AI tools into daily workflows for consumers and businesses globally.

Generative AI applications have demonstrated explosive growth in the first half of 2025, marking a significant milestone in the digital landscape. A recent report from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower reveals that these applications collectively garnered 1.7 billion downloads worldwide and nearly doubled their in-app revenue to $1.87 billion during this period. This represents a substantial increase from the second half of 2024, which saw 1 billion downloads and $932 million in revenue.

The surge in engagement is equally impressive, with users spending over 15.6 billion hours on generative AI apps across 426 billion individual app sessions in the first half of 2025. This is nearly double the 8.5 billion hours tracked in the preceding six months, indicating a rapid integration of AI tools into daily routines for both consumers and businesses.

Geographically, Asia has emerged as a dominant force in this growth, accounting for 42.6% of total downloads. Markets like India and China experienced an 80% increase in downloads, significantly outpacing Europe’s 51% and North America’s 39%. While Latin America recorded the highest growth in in-app purchases, North America still maintains a substantial 40% share of the total revenue generated by these applications.

Among the leading generative AI apps, ChatGPT continues to hold a dominant position. Sensor Tower’s data indicates that ChatGPT was the top app by in-app revenue in most countries, with the notable exception of China, where DeepSeek saw higher download numbers shortly after its launch. User engagement with ChatGPT is particularly strong, with users spending an average of 12.1 days per month on the app, mirroring the usage frequency of major social and information platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit. Only Google surpasses ChatGPT in terms of monthly usage frequency.

Furthermore, ChatGPT’s average daily usage reached 16 minutes in the first half of 2025, narrowing the gap with top search engines and browsers, which average 18.2 minutes. The report also highlights a shift in usage patterns, with over a third of Q2 2025 prompts on ChatGPT being related to lifestyle and entertainment, encompassing topics such as health, shopping, finance, and meal planning. This suggests that generative AI is increasingly becoming a primary tool for consumers beyond work-related tasks.

The term ‘AI’ itself has become a significant marketing strategy. Apps that included ‘AI’ in their name or marketing materials saw a noticeable bump in downloads, especially after updates. In total, AI-tagged apps were downloaded more than 7.5 billion times in the first half of 2025, accounting for approximately 10% of total global downloads. This trend spans various app categories, including content creation, photo editing, health and nutrition, studying, and translation. However, Sensor Tower cautions that the impact of adding ‘AI’ to an app’s branding tends to be temporary unless backed by actual functionality, emphasizing that quality and user experience remain crucial for sustained growth.
