Mount Sinai’s Dr. Ali Soroush Pioneers Generative AI in Gastroenterology for Enhanced Clinical Practice and Research

TLDR: Dr. Ali Soroush, an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Mount Sinai, is spearheading the integration of generative artificial intelligence into gastroenterology. His work focuses on leveraging AI to automate data extraction from electronic health records, develop advanced risk models for cancer screening, and improve overall clinical workflows, aiming to reduce clinician burden and enhance patient care.

Dr. Ali Soroush, an Assistant Professor of Medicine (Gastroenterology, and Data-Driven and Digital Medicine) at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, is at the forefront of applying generative artificial intelligence (AI) to clinical practice and research within the field of gastroenterology. With a unique cross-disciplinary background encompassing medicine, data science, and biomedical informatics, Dr. Soroush is developing innovative tools designed to transform how unstructured clinical data is utilized and to alleviate the workload on clinicians.

His pioneering efforts include automating data extraction from electronic health records (EHRs) and creating sophisticated risk models for cancer screening. Dr. Soroush emphasizes that using generative AI to extract and organize data from clinical text within EHRs has the potential to revolutionize patient care and significantly reduce clinician burnout. His team is actively developing tools capable of interpreting complex clinical notes, extracting relevant GI-specific information, and structuring it for various downstream applications.

Dr. Soroush’s dedication to maximizing the impact of big data on GI medicine began during his fellowship training five years ago. While serving as chief gastroenterology fellow at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, he successfully migrated traditional workflows to cloud-based platforms and leveraged the EHR system to standardize and automate clinical processes for his colleagues. Concurrently, he earned an MS in patient-oriented research and pursued additional research training in AI, data science, and biomedical informatics.

Beyond his direct research, Dr. Soroush is committed to improving AI literacy and fostering innovation among gastroenterologists. He is collaborating with major professional gastroenterology societies to organize extensive educational campaigns and mentorship programs, particularly for trainees and early-career professionals. These initiatives aim to help gastroenterologists understand and responsibly apply generative AI tools in their clinical workflows and research programs, focusing on practical applications that address real-world challenges such as enhancing patient communication, streamlining documentation, and augmenting clinical decision support.

His research also extends to personalizing GI cancer screening, moving beyond conventional risk stratification methods. Dr. Soroush aims to develop generative AI methods for large-scale extraction and structuring of clinical data from EHRs and to employ novel machine learning strategies for improved GI cancer risk assessments. Notably, he presented the first cumulative risk model for upper gastrointestinal cancer at the American Gastroenterological Association’s Digestive Disease Week in May 2025, demonstrating the power of big data in unlocking new risk assessment strategies. Dr. Soroush is also a co-author on a paper titled ‘Impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Gastroenterology Workforce and Practice,’ published in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology in May 2025.
