TLDR: Amazon is reportedly closing its artificial intelligence research lab in Shanghai, a decision influenced by escalating US-China tensions and the company’s ongoing global job reductions. This move aligns with a broader trend among tech giants to streamline operations while increasing focus on core AI initiatives.
Amazon is in the process of shutting down its artificial intelligence (AI) research lab in Shanghai, a development initially reported by the Financial Times on Wednesday, July 23, 2025. While Reuters could not immediately confirm the report, and Amazon did not provide an immediate comment, the decision appears to be a strategic adjustment within the company’s global operations.
The closure is reportedly linked to the escalating tensions between Washington and Beijing, which have led to increased scrutiny of American companies operating within China. Wang Minjie, a scientist at the Shanghai lab, indicated via a WeChat post that his team was “being dissolved due to strategic adjustments amid US-China tensions.”
The Shanghai AI lab was established in 2018 under Amazon Web Services (AWS). Although the precise number of employees at the Shanghai research lab is not specified, AWS had previously employed over 1,000 staff in China at its peak.

This move by Amazon is part of a larger trend of global job cuts across the tech industry. The company’s decision to close the Shanghai lab mirrors similar restructuring efforts by other major tech firms, including Microsoft and Meta, which have also announced layoffs this year as they increasingly prioritize and invest in core artificial intelligence capabilities.
