TLDR: OpenAI’s ChatGPT now processes over 2.5 billion user prompts daily worldwide, marking a 150% increase in just seven months. India has emerged as a key market, leading globally in mobile adoption and contributing significantly to the platform’s rapid growth, which now handles one-fifth of Google’s daily search volume.
OpenAI’s flagship artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT, has achieved a remarkable milestone, now processing an astounding 2.5 billion user prompts daily across the globe. This represents a staggering 150% surge in usage since December 2024, when the platform was handling approximately 1 billion daily queries, demonstrating an accelerated adoption rate that far outpaces historical trajectories of major tech platforms. The growth from 1 billion to 2.5 billion daily prompts occurred in just seven months.
The United States remains a significant contributor to this volume, accounting for over 330 million daily prompts, which is more than 13% of the total global interactions. However, India has emerged as a pivotal and rapidly expanding market for ChatGPT. According to Sensor Tower data, as cited in Mary Meeker’s Internet Trends report, India constituted 13.5% of ChatGPT’s mobile app user base as of April 25, surpassing the U.S. at 8.9% and Indonesia at 5.7%. This positions India as OpenAI’s second-largest and fastest-growing market, with active users in the country tripling over the past year.
This explosive growth underscores the mainstream integration of artificial intelligence into daily digital routines. ChatGPT now handles roughly one-fifth of Google’s daily search volume, which is estimated to be between 14 to 16 billion queries. Unlike traditional search engines that primarily provide links, ChatGPT offers direct, conversational responses, summaries, and assists with complex tasks such as coding and writing. This immediacy and personalized interaction have proven highly attractive to users, particularly students who are increasingly utilizing the AI as a ‘tutor’ for homework and intricate concepts.
OpenAI has confirmed that the majority of its more than 500 million weekly active users access the platform through its free version. This weekly active user base itself saw a significant jump from 300 million in December to over 500 million by March, highlighting the widespread accessibility and appeal of the AI tool.
