Galway Cafe Faces Backlash, Apologizes for AI-Generated Social Media Content

TLDR: Jemi Lighthouse, a vegan and vegetarian cafe in Galway, Ireland, issued an apology after receiving criticism for using generative AI in its social media marketing, including an AI-generated woman promoting their food. The cafe stated it used AI to express themselves as an introverted team and has since removed all AI-generated content, committing to customer feedback.

Jemi Lighthouse, a popular vegan and vegetarian cafe located on Abbeygate Street in Galway, Ireland, has issued a public apology following a wave of criticism regarding its use of generative artificial intelligence in social media marketing. The cafe faced backlash after customers found its AI-generated content, particularly a video featuring an AI-created woman describing their food, to be ‘creepy’ and unsettling.

The controversy erupted when the cafe’s social media posts, which incorporated AI-generated visuals and narratives, drew negative attention from patrons. One commenter on the Galway subreddit, where the issue was widely discussed, remarked, ‘That video was incredibly creepy. Introverted or not, they could have found a real person to do the talking, if not a staff member, then a friend or family member.’ Another expressed bewilderment, stating, ‘I can’t understand how they thought AI-generated videos of people who literally do not exist raving about their café would inspire confidence in their food.’

In response to the public outcry, Jemi Lighthouse took to its social media stories to address the concerns. The cafe explained its rationale for using AI, stating, ‘As an introverted team, we found in AI a way to express ourselves and communicate more effectively.’ They emphasized that their intention was never ‘to offend or disrespect anyone who follows and supports us.’

The apology further detailed the cafe’s decision to remove all content created with generative AI. ‘Out of respect for our customers, we would like to share an important decision,’ the cafe wrote. ‘We have carefully listened to the feedback from customers who reached out to us politely and expressed their concerns about Artificial Intelligence in the creation of marketing content.’ Jemi Lighthouse concluded by affirming, ‘we deeply value this connection and remain open to dialogue and continuous improvement.’
