Tripura Advances Governance with Generative AI Workshop for Digital Transformation

TLDR: Tripura recently hosted a three-day ‘Generative AI’ workshop, titled “General AI for Impact: Smart Tools for Smarter Governance,” aimed at enhancing digital skills and promoting smarter administration. Inaugurated by Minister Bikash Debbarma, the event saw over 60 officials participate, focusing on practical AI applications like drafting, summarization, and Python-based statistical analysis to drive data-driven governance.

In a significant stride towards modernizing its administrative framework, Tripura successfully conducted a three-day workshop on ‘Generative AI’ titled “General AI for Impact: Smart Tools for Smarter Governance.” The event, which commenced on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, was inaugurated by Minister Bikash Debbarma at the Smart Training Centre, IT Bhawan, Indranagar, Agartala.

The workshop was a collaborative effort between the Directorate of Economics and Statistics (Planning – Statistics Department), Government of Tripura, and the National Building Organization (NBO), Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India.

Minister Bikash Debbarma emphasized the profound potential of Generative AI, particularly in the field of statistics. He commended the department for its proactive adoption of advanced technologies and encouraged participants to become leaders in digital transformation through continuous skill development and innovation in governance. Debbarma stated, “This initiative marks a strong stride toward equipping Tripura’s administrative framework with intelligent digital solutions and reinforces the state’s commitment to modern, data-driven governance.”

N. K. Santoshi, Director General (Central Statistics), MoSPI, lauded Tripura’s rapid capacity-building efforts and its leadership in digital adoption, remarking, “Tripura may be small in size, but it’s racing ahead in embracing technology.” He also praised Special Secretary Abhishek Chandra, IAS, for spearheading AI-driven initiatives in critical areas such as data collection, surveys, reporting, and program execution.

The hands-on demonstrations during the workshop were led by resource expert Dr. Reshmi Manna, focusing on the practical applications of AI tools. Sessions covered AI-assisted drafting, summarization techniques, and exercises in prompt engineering. Participants also received training in Python-based statistical analysis, interpretation, and predictive modeling, equipping them with future-ready skills.

D. Reang, Director of DES, highlighted the increasing importance of Generative AI in the evolving technological landscape and urged attendees to maximize the benefits of the training. The workshop saw active participation from over 60 officials from Tripura’s Directorate of Economics and Statistics, along with representatives from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), Government of India, underscoring the broad interest in enhancing digital capabilities for improved governance.
