AIB Equips 10,000 Employees with Microsoft’s AI Copilot

TLDR: Allied Irish Banks (AIB) is deploying Microsoft Copilot, an artificial intelligence tool, to its 10,000-strong workforce. The initiative aims to automate routine tasks, enhance productivity, and foster innovation. The AI integration will be a part of everyday applications like Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams. The bank has assured that the AI tools will not have access to customer data.

Allied Irish Banks (AIB) has announced a significant step in its digital transformation strategy by rolling out Microsoft Copilot, a suite of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, to its 10,000 employees. This move positions AIB as a pioneer in the adoption of enterprise-scale AI within the Irish financial services sector. The primary goal of this initiative is to automate repetitive tasks, thereby freeing up employees to concentrate on more complex and value-added work, ultimately enhancing customer service and driving innovation.

The AI capabilities will be integrated into the Microsoft 365 applications that AIB staff use daily, including Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, and PowerPoint. The bank has explicitly stated that these new AI tools will not have access to any customer data or systems, ensuring customer privacy and security.

AIB’s Chief Technology Officer, Graham Fagan, commented on the rollout, stating, “We’re equipping every AIB colleague with Microsoft Copilot tools – embedding AI into the flow of work to simplify tasks, building fluency and elevating customer experiences. We’ve been exploring its potential with our employees through collaboration and testing, and now we’re scaling it across the organisation to deliver smarter, faster, and more meaningful outcomes for our customers and our people.”

The decision to implement Copilot across the organization follows a successful pilot program that initially involved 70 employees and was later expanded to a representative group of 1,000 staff members. In addition to the Microsoft 365 integration, AIB’s AI Centre of Excellence will utilize Copilot Studio to create bespoke AI solutions tailored to the bank’s specific needs. Furthermore, there are plans to introduce GitHub Copilot to the bank’s engineering teams to accelerate software development.

AIB has been actively engaging with the Financial Services Union, which represents workers in the sector, to ensure a smooth transition and address any concerns regarding the implementation of AI. This move comes at a time when AI adoption in Ireland is experiencing a significant surge. Research from Microsoft and Trinity College Dublin indicates that AI adoption in the country has nearly doubled to 91% in 2025 from 49% in 2024 and is projected to contribute €250 billion to the Irish economy by 2035.
