AI-RAN Alliance Surpasses 100 Members, Welcomes Vodafone to its Ranks

TLDR: The AI-RAN Alliance, a consortium dedicated to integrating artificial intelligence into wireless networks, has announced that its membership has exceeded 100 organizations. The global telecommunications company Vodafone is one of the newest members, a move that strengthens the alliance’s mission to innovate in the field of AI-driven Radio Access Networks (RAN).

The AI-RAN Alliance has achieved a significant milestone, growing to over 100 members since its inception in 2024. This rapid expansion, which includes the recent addition of telecommunications giant Vodafone, highlights the increasing global focus on the integration of artificial intelligence with Radio Access Networks (RAN). The alliance brings together a diverse group of technology leaders, academic institutions, service providers, and research labs from more than 17 countries, all working towards the common goal of revolutionizing wireless networks.

The primary mission of the AI-RAN Alliance is to accelerate innovation in AI-RAN, with the aim of enhancing mobile network efficiency, reducing power consumption, and retrofitting existing infrastructure for the AI era. The alliance’s work is paving the way for new economic opportunities for telecommunications companies and is considered a crucial step in the evolution towards 5G and the forthcoming 6G networks.

The alliance’s research and innovation are concentrated on three key pillars: ‘AI for RAN,’ which seeks to improve RAN capabilities and spectral efficiency; ‘AI and RAN,’ which focuses on the efficient use of infrastructure through the integration of AI and RAN processes; and ‘AI on RAN,’ which aims to deploy AI applications and services at the network edge.

Alex Jinsung Choi, the Chair of the AI-RAN Alliance and a Principal Fellow at SoftBank’s Research Institute of Advanced Technology, expressed his enthusiasm about the alliance’s growth. He stated, “We are thrilled by the extraordinary growth of the AI-RAN Alliance. This milestone underscores the global momentum behind advancing AI for RAN, AI and RAN, and AI on RAN. Our members are pioneering how artificial intelligence can be deeply embedded into radio access networks — from foundational research to real-world deployment — to create intelligent, adaptive, and efficient wireless systems.”

The inclusion of Vodafone is a significant development for the alliance. Francisco Martin, Vodafone’s Head of Open RAN, commented on the company’s commitment to this technological advancement. “Vodafone is committed to using AI to optimize and enhance the performance of our radio access networks,” he said. “Running AI and RAN workloads on shared infrastructure boosts efficiency, while integrating AI and generative applications over RAN enables new real-time capabilities at the network edge.”
