KNIME Unveils Enhanced Platform for Accessible Agentic AI Development

TLDR: KNIME has released version 5.5 of its Analytics Platform, significantly advancing its framework for building agentic AI applications. This update focuses on democratizing agent development through new no-code capabilities, seamless integration of existing workflows as tools, and expanded support for various AI models. The enhancements aim to simplify and accelerate the creation of autonomous AI solutions, making them more accessible to a wider range of users, including citizen data scientists.

Zurich, Switzerland – July 8, 2025 – KNIME, a leading open-source analytics vendor, today announced the general availability of KNIME Analytics Platform 5.5, a major update designed to revolutionize the development of agentic AI applications. This release builds upon the framework first introduced at the KNIME Spring Summit in March, offering substantial enhancements that simplify and accelerate the creation of autonomous AI solutions.

Agentic AI represents a significant evolution beyond traditional generative AI chatbots. Unlike reactive systems, agentic AI applications possess contextual awareness, enabling them to reason independently and act autonomously to assist workers. This latest update from KNIME is poised to make this cutting-edge technology more accessible to a broader audience, including those without extensive programming knowledge.

Key among the new capabilities in KNIME Analytics Platform 5.5 is a strong emphasis on no-code development. Previously, defining parameters for AI tools often required familiarity with JSON. The new version allows users to create agent tools directly from existing workflows using familiar configuration nodes, such as String Configuration, drastically lowering the barrier to entry. Mike Leone, an analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group (now part of Omdia), lauded the update, stating, “It’s a significant leap forward for Knime customers, helping them simplify and accelerate AI agent development while making it accessible to a broader range of users. They can now create agent tools directly from existing workflows with no-code ease.”

The platform introduces several new nodes and features to streamline agent creation and interaction. The ‘Agent Prompter’ node facilitates the selection and calling of various tools, including models and data files, during development. For user interaction, the ‘Agent Chat View’ node enables natural language conversations with agents, allowing users to assign tasks and receive outputs seamlessly. Furthermore, a simplified metadata structure has been implemented to aid in governance, ensuring responsible deployment of AI agents.

KNIME Analytics Platform 5.5 also expands its ecosystem by offering new connectors for a wider array of AI models. Users now have increased flexibility to integrate models from Anthropic Claude, Google AI Studio and Vertex AI (including Gemini models), and IBM watsonx.ai, allowing them to select the best-fit model for their specific needs. This broad model choice, coupled with open ecosystem support, strengthens KNIME’s competitive standing.

Kevin Petrie, an analyst at BARC U.S., commented on the strategic importance of the update: “Knime is definitely strengthening its competitive position in the market. They have enriched how they help citizen data scientists and developers build AI applications and agents, with a focus on extensibility, model choice and open ecosystem support.”

To support users in leveraging these new features, KNIME has launched a series of free courses, including ‘Data-Aware Agentic AI,’ ‘GenAI & Data Workflows,’ and ‘AI Chatbots, RAG, & Governance.’ These educational resources are designed to guide users through building tools and agents with their own data, integrating generative AI into analytics, and applying GenAI responsibly.

Beyond agentic AI, version 5.5 also brings general user interface enhancements, improved date and time handling, and direct integration with Microsoft Fabric, further enhancing the overall user experience and workflow performance. Looking ahead, KNIME’s product development will continue to prioritize AI, particularly agentic capabilities, and user workflow experience, with a focus on making advanced application development even easier and integrating AI to boost productivity, including support for multimodal AI.
