TLDR: Cruise lines are rapidly integrating generative AI into various operations, from personalized marketing and booking systems to operational efficiencies and guest services. Companies like Virgin Voyages, Royal Caribbean Group, and HX Expeditions are leveraging AI to boost sales, streamline data management, and improve overall customer satisfaction, despite concerns about AI “hallucinations” in customer-facing roles.
The cruise industry is undergoing a significant digital transformation, with generative artificial intelligence (AI) emerging as a pivotal tool to enhance both operational efficiencies and guest experiences. Major players like Virgin Voyages, Royal Caribbean Group, and HX Expeditions are at the forefront of this adoption, deploying AI across various facets of their businesses, from customer service and marketing to complex data integration.
Virgin Voyages has notably partnered with Google Cloud to implement a fleet of 50 AI agents powered by Gemini Enterprise. A key initiative is ‘Email Ellie,’ the cruise line’s first AI-powered marketing assistant. This AI agent is responsible for generating hyper-personalized marketing outreach, trained on internal brand frameworks and infused with Virgin Voyages’ distinctive ‘cheeky, clever tone.’ The company reports that ‘Email Ellie’ has reduced the time spent on campaign copy creation by an estimated 40%, allowing marketers to focus on higher-value tasks such as spotlighting new itineraries and advancing personalization efforts. These AI-generated campaigns are also credited with a 28% year-over-year increase in July sales. Nirmal Saverimuttu, CEO of Virgin Voyages, expressed enthusiasm, stating, “‘Email Ellie’ is just the beginning. It’s already helped deliver record-breaking sales, and she’s proof that AI agents scale our impact and amplify our human touches.”
Royal Caribbean Group is also positioning AI as a core driver of its business transformation. CEO Jason Liberty highlighted the company’s focus on building a vacation platform that leverages “technology and AI that enhance every step of the guest journey.” Liberty noted that AI tools are becoming “smarter and smarter so that we’re able to curate what is relevant to that consumer,” which is attracting new-to-cruise customers and encouraging shifts from other brands. The company has observed a record share of onboard revenue booked pre-cruise, with nearly 90% of these purchases made through digital channels. An independent analysis by Klover.ai suggests that Royal Caribbean’s AI strategy aims to “eliminate historical friction points and deliver hyper-personalized experiences” to boost guest satisfaction, deepen loyalty, and drive ancillary revenue.
HX Expeditions has implemented AI for critical data integration, partnering with Versori to connect its customer relationship management platform with its Seaware booking system. This AI agent integration facilitated the transfer of customer and operational data that would have otherwise required hundreds of hours of manual entry. Will Jackson, COO of Versori, explained that their “agentic platform … natively uses AI at its core to help build out workflows” and that their “agentic model and LLMs and AI massively expedite the understanding of Seaware as a legacy system.” This approach significantly reduced the need for “five or six staff for around six months to manually re-enter all those records.”
Despite the widespread adoption, industry experts acknowledge the challenges, particularly the risk of AI “hallucinations.” Will Jackson of Versori emphasized the importance of control and error management, stating, “Ultimately, the way we use AI, it’s never left to do something. It’s never given any accountability. It’s us using it to accelerate our delivery for our clients, but we’re using it in a way where it’s on rails to an extent.” Sefton Monk, CEO of My Kind of Cruise, believes that while AI will significantly improve “cleaning up efficiencies” on the non-customer-facing side, human interaction remains essential for booking and complex itineraries due to the current limitations of AI in guaranteeing accuracy. Monk also envisions future onboard applications, such as in-cabin AI assistants providing real-time information on itineraries and ship navigation.
