TLDR: Perplexity has rolled out significant AI upgrades, including a ‘completely reimagined’ Comet Assistant for its AI browser, which boasts a 23% performance improvement and new multi-tasking capabilities. Additionally, the company introduced a groundbreaking AI-powered patent search tool, allowing users to conduct natural language patent research with AI-generated summaries, aiming to democratize access to intellectual property data.
AI search engine startup Perplexity continues its rapid pace of innovation, announcing substantial upgrades to its offerings, including a smarter Comet Assistant and a novel patent search tool. These enhancements underscore Perplexity’s commitment to evolving the generative AI experience and challenging traditional web browsing and research paradigms.
The Comet Assistant, the core AI agent within Perplexity’s AI browser, Comet, has been ‘completely reimagined‘ to deliver a more robust and intuitive user experience. Internal tests conducted by the company reveal a significant 23% improvement in its performance compared to its predecessor. This enhancement is particularly beneficial for complex tasks requiring multiple sequential steps. The upgraded assistant now features the ability to work across multiple tabs, facilitating tasks like spreadsheet data entry. It also incorporates a new permission-seeking mechanism, prompting users for approval before executing tasks, and demonstrates improved interaction with complex web environments due to adjustments in its underlying architecture. The Comet browser itself, which offers a unique generative AI experience by allowing users to ask questions directly about webpages, was made free for Windows and Mac users earlier this year.

In a move set to revolutionize intellectual property research, Perplexity has also launched a new AI patent search tool. Described by CEO Aravind Srinivas as the ‘world’s first AI patent research agent,‘ this tool enables users to search for patents using natural language queries, such as ‘Key quantum computing patents since 2024’ or ‘Are there any patents on AI language learning?’ The system then provides relevant results accompanied by AI-generated summaries of each patent. This feature is currently available in beta for all users, with Perplexity Pro and Max subscribers benefiting from additional usage quotas and configuration options. The tool aims to democratize access to vast patent data, replacing complex search syntax with a conversational search model. Its core innovation lies in its ability to detect conceptual similarities, effectively linking patents with varying terminology, and extending its search beyond traditional archives to include academic papers and open-source software repositories, offering a comprehensive view of emerging technologies.
