VOC Port Forges Ahead with Rs 1.27 Lakh Crore Green Energy and AI Integration Pacts

TLDR: The V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) in Tuticorin has secured 28 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) totaling Rs 1.27 lakh crore (over $15 billion) during India Maritime Week 2025. These agreements are set to drive port-led industrialization, promote green hydrogen and alternative fuels, and integrate artificial intelligence into port operations, with an ambitious goal of making the port carbon-negative.

The V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) in Tuticorin has taken a monumental leap towards sustainable and technologically advanced maritime operations by signing 28 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with various stakeholders. These agreements, collectively valued at an impressive Rs 1.27 lakh crore (over $15 billion), were formalized during the prestigious India Maritime Week 2025. The initiatives are set to propel VOC Port into a leadership position in green energy and digital transformation within the global maritime industry.

A significant portion of the investment, exceeding Rs 42,000 crore, is specifically earmarked for the green energy sector. Three major MoUs were highlighted: Green Infra Renewable Energy Farms Private Limited (GIREFPL): An investment of Rs 25,400 crore for establishing a common storage farm or immediate tanking storage facility for green ammonia and other hydrogen derivatives. ACME Green Hydrogen and Chemicals Private Limited: A Rs 12,000 crore agreement for a 1,200 MTPD Green Ammonia Project. CGS Energy Private Limited: A Rs 5,000 crore investment for a 300 TPD Green Ammonia production facility.

These projects are strategically designed to solidify VOC Port’s role as a pioneering Green Hydrogen Hub for southern India.

Susanta Kumar Purohit, Chairman of VOC Port Authority, emphasized the broad scope of these partnerships, stating, “These agreements emphasize port-driven industrialisation, green hydrogen and alternative fuels, alongside the integration of artificial intelligence into our port activities. We anticipate substantial inflows of investment and the generation of many new jobs as a result. We are working extremely hard to build VOC Port into a port of the future, with green energy initiatives and the development of an outer harbour.”

The port’s commitment to sustainability was further underscored by its ambitious goal to become “carbon negative,” a vision praised by Prof. Ramya Venkateswaran of IIM Calcutta. She remarked, “VOCPA has been a pioneer in sustainability initiatives. While most would aim to achieve net-zero emissions, the VOC Port Chairman has set a far more ambitious goal—to make the port carbon negative. The team has put in tremendous effort towards this vision, setting an exemplary benchmark for other ports to follow and aligning with global sustainability standards.” VOC Port also received the ‘Green Visionary’ award at India Maritime Week 2025, acknowledging its dedication to green initiatives.

Rajesh Soundrarajan, Deputy Chairman, VOC Port, highlighted the significance of the event for India’s maritime sector, stating, “This gathering stands as a pivotal moment for India’s maritime industry. Over the past two days, VOC Port has sealed multiple MoUs; these partnerships will propel VOCPA towards leadership in sustainable global maritime practices.”

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, described the MoU signing ceremony as a “major stride towards India’s vision of becoming a formidable maritime nation.” He noted that “23 MoUs have been exchanged, promising massive investments. Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister, India is becoming a favourable destination for global investors.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has actively championed the Indian maritime sector, inviting global investors and highlighting significant achievements. India’s port capacity has doubled from 1,400 to 2,762 MMTPA, and cargo handling has increased from 972 to 1,594 MMT, with 855 MMT recorded in FY 2024-25. Furthermore, vessel turnaround time has been dramatically reduced from 93 hours to 48 hours, showcasing enhanced efficiency and operational excellence.
