SEOUL, South Korea – On November 2, 2025, South Korea and Singapore officially upgraded their bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership, marking a significant milestone as they commemorate 50 years of diplomatic ties. The announcement followed a summit in Seoul between South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, during which a series of Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) were signed to deepen cooperation across various critical sectors.
The core of these new agreements centers on advanced technology and sustainable development. Key MOUs were inked for collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI) and the establishment of a green and digital shipping corridor. The AI cooperation aims to foster joint research in high-tech areas and facilitate exchanges between companies, while the green and digital shipping initiative seeks to support the maritime sector’s transition away from greenhouse gas-emitting fuels, positioning both nations to jointly lead the logistics and shipping industries.
Beyond AI and green shipping, the two nations also committed to enhancing cooperation in defense technology, digital collaboration (encompassing quantum-safe communications and cybersecurity), personnel administration, and cultural and sports exchanges. These broader agreements underscore a comprehensive approach to strengthening ties, from sharing best practices in public service human capital management to promoting closer dialogue through cultural and sports initiatives.
Prime Minister Wong emphasized the robust nature of the partnership, stating that “both sides have worked closely together while charting their own path and the partnership is stronger than ever.” He further highlighted the shared commitment to global stability and prosperity, noting, “We will work together to promote regional peace, stability and prosperity, and to reinforce the multilateral rules-based trading system, from which we have both benefited.”
