TLDR: SoftSmart Enterprise Solutions has launched an advanced AI and OCR-powered system designed to enhance transparency and public trust in Nigeria’s election processes. The system automates the real-time collation and validation of election results from polling units, creating a live public scoreboard and aiming for over 95% accuracy.
Abuja, Nigeria – In a significant stride towards fostering credible and verifiable elections, SoftSmart Enterprise Solutions, a leading technology company, has introduced a groundbreaking real-time result collation system. Unveiled at a news conference in Abuja on Friday, the innovation is specifically engineered to promote transparency and rebuild public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral processes.
Mr. Charles Yakubu, Managing Director of SoftSmart Enterprise Solutions, hailed the system as a ‘breakthrough’ for the nation’s democratic journey. He elaborated that the system leverages cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology to streamline the election result management.
The core functionality of the system involves automatically capturing and processing election results directly from polling units as they are uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Result Viewing Portal (IReV). This sophisticated technology is designed to instantly extract, validate, and upload data from the INEC Form EC8A – the official results sheet from each polling unit – into a central database. The ultimate outcome is the creation of a live, publicly accessible scoreboard of election results.
“We can go to IReV portal, scrape it, review results and we can actually go there and do what I call a digital ingestion into the database,” Mr. Yakubu explained. He added, “All these make it possible for us to have a live scorecard of elections; everybody is seeing the results collated. Our technology is going to introduce what I call visible collation.”
The application’s advanced AI capabilities enable it to recognize and verify entries on each EC8A form with remarkable speed and precision, achieving over 95 percent accuracy within just 30 seconds. Yakubu attributed this high level of innovation to advancements in AI and vision technology, specifically highlighting the integral role of Google’s image recognition tools in achieving near-perfect data capture.
Beyond its technical prowess, the system promises substantial benefits for electoral integrity. It will empower citizens, political parties, and election observers to track the progress of results comprehensively, from individual polling units up to ward and local government levels. This enhanced visibility is expected to significantly boost transparency and accountability throughout the electoral cycle.
Mr. Yakubu emphasized that the innovation is intended to complement INEC’s existing systems, thereby enhancing overall efficiency and strengthening citizens’ trust in the electioneering process. He drew a parallel to international electoral practices, stating, “When you watch the election night in America, you get a projected winner of an election.” He further noted, “If there is a pattern of voting in a place, the only thing you just want to see is if the pattern has changed and if the pattern is sustained, you can predict percentage scores of candidates.”
