Zoho Bolsters Indian Government Digital Infrastructure and Unveils Expanded AI Agent Portfolio

TLDR: Zoho has successfully migrated over a million Indian government users to its Zoho Workplace platform, marking a significant step towards digital sovereignty. Concurrently, the company has launched an expanded suite of AI agents, powered by its proprietary Zia LLM, to enhance collaboration, HR, and customer experience across its product ecosystem, offering advanced functionalities like lead generation and document verification.

Chennai-based technology firm Zoho has announced a dual strategic advancement, detailing the successful migration of a substantial portion of the Indian government’s digital operations to its Zoho Workplace platform while simultaneously rolling out an expanded roster of artificial intelligence (AI) agents. This move underscores Zoho’s growing influence in enterprise solutions and its commitment to AI-driven innovation.

The migration project has seen Zoho transfer 1.1 million Government of India users to Zoho Workplace, with Zoho Chief Evangelist Raju Vegesna indicating that this is merely the initial phase, with ‘a few other million users coming’ as part of an ongoing process. The initiative stems from a 2023 request for proposals by India’s National Informatics Center (NIC) to shift collaboration services to a dedicated, secure environment. Zoho was selected to manage and migrate official email and office suite services, with its applications hosted in a secure data center under NIC’s control, complete with a robust cybersecurity stack. This transition is hailed as a significant stride towards ‘digital aatmanirbharta’ (digital self-reliance) and a ‘profound declaration of digital sovereignty,’ aiming to enhance data security and promote indigenous innovation by reducing dependence on foreign tech ecosystems. The seven-year contract, signed in 2023, ensures that government emails retain their existing nic.in and gov.in domains, backed by comprehensive security audits from NIC, CERT-In, and Software Quality Systems (SQS). Zoho CEO Sridhar Vembu reiterated the company’s privacy-first philosophy, stating, ‘Our SaaS business is built on trust — we do not access or monetize customer data.’

In parallel, Zoho has significantly expanded its AI capabilities by rolling out a series of AI agents integrated across its collaboration, human resources, and customer experience applications. These new AI agents are available at no additional charge and are a direct follow-up to the earlier launch of Zia Hubs and Zia LLM, Zoho’s proprietary B2B large language model. The Zia LLM, trained on Zoho-specific use cases, is available in various model sizes (1.3B, 2.6B, and 7B parameters) and is optimized for internal deployment, supporting functions like summarization, RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation), and code generation. Ramprakash Ramamoorthy, director of AI research at Zoho, clarified the model’s enterprise focus, stating, ‘This is not ChatGPT and this is not a consumer grade LLM. This is an enterprise LLM backbone that sits deeply tied into Zoho’s tools.’

Among the newly launched agents are a Lead Generation Agent, designed to sift through unread messages in Zoho Mail and CRM to identify sales queries and convert them into leads, and an AI Base Creation tool that allows users to generate use cases with simple prompts. Zoho has also introduced over 25 AI agents, including specialized tools like Candidate Screener and Revenue Growth Specialist, which can be deployed as ‘digital employees’ with defined access and audit trails. For the Indian market, Zoho has developed specific AI agents for verifying documents such as PAN cards, Voter IDs, Udyog Aadhar, GSTIN, Driving Licenses, LPG connections, and Electricity Bills. The company is also implementing support for the Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol, enabling its Zia Agents to interact and collaborate with each other and with agents on other platforms. A customer, Edey, highlighted the importance of these advancements, noting, ‘Integrating AI and agentic systems into our workflow is key for the next six months to the year and going forward… Zoho’s AI driven suite can help us get there.’
