This assessment provides a tempered outlook on the rapid advancements in AI, even as Zhipu AI itself demonstrates aggressive growth and innovation within the sector.
Founded in 2019 as a spin-off from Tsinghua University, Zhipu AI has quickly emerged as one of China’s ‘AI tigers,’ attracting substantial investment and attention. The company has secured over 1 billion yuan ($137.22 million) in fresh funding, following a previous 3 billion yuan infusion, with significant backing from state-owned entities such as Hangzhou City Investment Group Industrial Fund and Shangcheng Capital. In March 2025, it further raised 500 million yuan (£54.8 million) from the state-owned Huafa Group, adding to a 1 billion yuan capital raise earlier that month. These investments underscore China’s strategic commitment to fostering a competitive domestic AI market and challenging U.S. technological dominance.
Zhipu AI has been actively expanding its product offerings, including the launch of AutoGLM Rumination, a free AI agent powered by its GLM-Z1-Air and GLM-4-Air-0414 models. This agent is touted to rival competitors like DeepSeek’s R1 in performance, operating up to eight times faster with fewer resources, and is offered free of charge, contrasting with other services that can cost up to $199 monthly. The company plans to introduce a suite of new AI models under an open-source framework, encompassing foundation, inference, multimodal models, and AI agents, aligning with industry trends emphasizing transparency and collaborative development.
Despite its rapid ascent, Zhipu AI faces considerable challenges, particularly on the international stage. The company was added to the U.S. Commerce Department’s export control list in January, restricting its access to American components. This move highlights geopolitical tensions surrounding AI development, with OpenAI reportedly viewing Zhipu AI as a ‘frontline threat’ to U.S. AI dominance. OpenAI has noted Zhipu AI’s close ties to Beijing, including over $1.4 billion in state funding and collaborations with China’s military, and its efforts to offer turnkey AI infrastructure across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and the UK.
