YouTube Music Introduces AI-Powered ‘Ask for Music’ Feature for Personalized Radio Stations

TLDR: YouTube Music is currently testing an innovative AI-powered feature, dubbed ‘Ask for music any way you like,’ which enables users to generate custom radio stations using natural language prompts. This experimental tool, initially spotted by a Reddit user, is rolling out to a select group of users and features a chat-based interface for voice or keyboard input. The AI crafts unique playlists with descriptive titles, though YouTube Music cautions that responses are experimental and advises against sharing sensitive information. This move positions YouTube Music to compete with similar generative AI features offered by rivals like Spotify.

YouTube Music is enhancing its user experience with the introduction of an experimental AI-powered feature, ‘Ask for music any way you like,’ designed to create highly personalized radio stations through natural language queries. This new tool, first brought to light by Reddit user ‘kater_pro,’ is currently in a limited rollout to a select group of users, indicating YouTube Music’s strategic push into generative AI for music curation.

The feature manifests as a distinctive purple and pink card on the Home feed, bearing a resemblance to the existing ‘Create a radio: Your music tuner’ card found in the Library tab. Upon selection, users are presented with a chat-based interface, allowing them to input their music requests either by voice or keyboard.

For instance, a user’s request for ‘Queer Hip Hop Beats’ resulted in a station described by the AI as ‘Rhymes and flows from the heart, a celebration of queer pride in hip hop’s art.’ The interface also provides a range of suggested prompts, such as ‘Catchy pop choruses,’ ‘Epic soundtracks,’ and ‘Upbeat pop anthems,’ alongside a ‘Surprise me!’ option for those seeking a randomly generated musical experience.

Once a prompt is entered, the AI processes the request and generates a custom radio station, presented in the familiar playlist card format. Each station is automatically named after the user’s prompt and is clearly marked ‘Created for you,’ accompanied by a fitting description.

YouTube Music has included a disclaimer, noting that ‘AI-generated responses are experimental,’ which suggests that the quality and accuracy of the curated playlists may vary. Users are also advised against sharing personal or confidential information within the chat interface.

This initiative by YouTube Music is seen as a direct challenge to other music streaming platforms, particularly Spotify, which has also been investing heavily in generative AI features for playlist creation. The success of YouTube Music’s ‘Ask for music any way you like’ will be closely watched as it expands its availability and refines its AI capabilities.
