YouTube Implements New Monetization Policy Targeting AI-Generated Content

TLDR: Starting July 15, 2025, YouTube will enforce a significant update to its monetization policies, specifically targeting low-effort, mass-produced, and AI-generated content. This change is intended to prioritize and reward original, human-driven creativity on the platform, while demonetizing channels that rely on automated or repetitive formats.

YouTube has announced a major overhaul of its monetization guidelines, set to take effect on July 15, 2025. The new policy is designed to demonetize channels that primarily feature low-quality, AI-generated, and mass-produced content. This move is a direct response to the proliferation of ‘faceless’ channels that often use automated technologies, such as text-to-speech voiceovers and repetitive slideshows, to generate revenue with minimal creative effort.

The company stated, “In order to monetize as part of the YouTube Partner Program, YouTube has always required creators to upload ‘original’ and ‘authentic’ content. On July 15, 2025, YouTube is updating our guidelines to better identify mass-produced and repetitious content. This update better reflects what ‘inauthentic’ content looks like today.”

The primary goal of this policy change is to enhance the integrity of the platform by rewarding creators who produce original and high-value content. YouTube aims to clean up its recommendation engine and rebuild viewer trust by ensuring that the platform promotes authentic, human-driven videos.

The new guidelines will specifically target several types of content for demonetization, including videos with AI-generated voiceovers, low-effort slideshows of content creators did not originally create, and compilations of clips from other sources with little to no added commentary or narrative.

While the use of AI tools is not entirely banned, the emphasis is on transformative content that adds unique value. For instance, creators can still use AI to enhance their original work, but they cannot rely solely on AI to generate entire videos. To remain in the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), creators must ensure their content provides significant original commentary, educational value, or a personal touch.

The existing YPP eligibility requirements of at least 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million valid Shorts views in the last 90 days will remain. However, YouTube will be using a combination of automated systems and human reviewers to enforce the new policies more strictly. Channels that are found to be in violation of the updated standards will be removed from the YPP and will need to make significant changes to their content before they can reapply for monetization.

This policy shift is also a response to advertiser concerns, as brands prefer to have their advertisements placed alongside high-quality and authentic content. By ensuring that ad revenue is directed towards genuine creators, YouTube is working to maintain a healthy and sustainable ecosystem for all stakeholders.

This move is particularly relevant in the context of the growing popularity of YouTube Shorts, which now receives 200 billion views daily. With up to 42% of Shorts being created with some level of AI assistance, the new policy aims to prevent the platform from being inundated with low-quality, AI-generated videos.

In conclusion, YouTube’s new monetization policy represents a significant step towards prioritizing authenticity and originality on the platform. While it may pose a challenge for creators who have relied on automated content generation, it is a clear message from YouTube that the future of the platform lies in the hands of genuine, creative individuals.
