Yahoo Japan, a prominent digital services provider and part of LY Corporation (which also operates LINE), has taken a significant step by making the use of artificial intelligence mandatory for its entire workforce of 11,000 employees. This ambitious initiative is designed to achieve a twofold increase in productivity over the next three years, while simultaneously cultivating an environment of continuous innovation within the company.
The core of this strategy involves deeply embedding generative AI into various facets of daily operations. Yahoo Japan has established specific business rules leveraging AI for common work areas such as research, information retrieval, document creation, and meeting management. These tasks collectively account for approximately 30% of the company’s overall work, highlighting the potential for substantial efficiency gains.
A key cultural shift being promoted is the ‘first asking AI’ approach. For internal searches, the company recommends its proprietary tool, ‘SeekAI.’ When it comes to external investigations, employees are encouraged to utilize AI searches with example prompts. In document creation, the focus is on using AI to generate outlines and proofread text, moving away from starting from scratch. Meeting protocols have also been revamped, with AI responsible for pre-organizing agendas and generating minutes, allowing human participants to concentrate solely on discussions with minimal attendance.
To ensure widespread adoption and proficiency, all employees have been provided with ChatGPT Enterprise accounts. Furthermore, mandatory e-learning training and examinations on prompting techniques and risk management are required to equip staff with the necessary skills for effective AI utilization. The company has already seen progress, with over 35 business efficiency projects underway and 51 AI functions integrated into personal services.

Yahoo Japan has also appointed a dedicated promoter for generative AI use and introduced an in-house awards system, signaling a commitment to embed AI deeply into the company culture rather than treating it as a temporary trend. This strategic move reflects a broader understanding that generative AI can serve as a fundamental tool to unlock human creativity, shifting the emphasis from mere operational efficiency to fostering deeper ‘thinking’ and ‘communicating’ among employees. This proactive embrace of AI aligns with Japan’s national efforts to leverage advanced technologies, including robotics and AI, to address demographic challenges and drive economic growth.
