TLDR: Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, xAI, is reportedly seeking a valuation of up to $200 billion in its upcoming funding round, a significant increase from its $18 billion valuation in May 2024. This comes as the company integrates its Grok chatbot with X and plans substantial investments in data centers, despite a recent statement from Musk denying the immediate need for funding.
Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, xAI, is reportedly preparing for a new funding round that could see its valuation soar to as much as $200 billion, according to recent reports from the Financial Times. This potential valuation, ranging between $170 billion and $200 billion, would mark a tenfold increase from its $18 billion valuation in May 2024, underscoring the rapid growth and investor interest in the AI sector.
The fundraising discussions are currently preliminary, with a formal launch potentially as early as next month. This would represent xAI’s third major share sale within a two-month period, following a $10 billion raise through loans and cash in July 2025 and a $300 million secondary stock offering in June 2025. Morgan Stanley also noted in late June that xAI had secured a $5 billion debt raise alongside a separate $5 billion strategic equity investment, aimed at expanding its AI infrastructure amidst fierce competition.
Despite these reports, Elon Musk posted on X (formerly Twitter) after the Financial Times article, stating, ‘XAI is not seeking funding right now. We have plenty of capital.’ This statement introduces a degree of ambiguity regarding the immediate necessity of the funding round.
A pivotal investor in this potential round is expected to be Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), which already holds an indirect stake in xAI via Kingdom Holding Company, an entity that previously invested $800 million in the AI firm.
xAI’s strategic moves include its acquisition of X in March 2025, an all-stock transaction valued at $45 billion. This merger aims to integrate xAI’s chatbot business with Musk’s social media platform, with the combined entity potentially reaching a valuation of approximately $245 billion if the latest funding round is successful.
Looking ahead, xAI has ambitious financial projections, anticipating over $13 billion in annual earnings by 2029 and $1 billion in gross revenue by the end of 2025. To support its expansion and compete with rivals like OpenAI, which sought a $300 billion valuation in March, xAI plans to invest $18 billion in data centers.

The company’s flagship product, the Grok chatbot, recently unveiled its fourth iteration, designed for direct integration with the X platform. However, its rollout has faced challenges, including controversies over extremist content and user complaints regarding accuracy and erratic tone. xAI has committed to implementing stricter content filters and enhanced fact-checking capabilities in future updates to address these issues.
